Project Title: Aesthetica Art Prize and Future Now Symposium 2020

Laura Besançon is a finalist in the Aesthetica Art Prize 2020 and her selected work will be exhibited at the Aesthetica Art Prize exhibition at York Art Gallery. The exhibition opens to the public on the 13th of March (with the Private View on the 12th) and will run until 7th June 2020. The 18 shortlisted artists were selected from over 4,000 entries and the diverse works include questions about an increasing level of mass consumption, over-stimulation and emotional disconnection. The Art Prize is hosted by the international art and culture publication, Aesthetica Magazine. It is an annual Prize and exhibition that celebrates innovative works from a range of media. Aesthetica’s in-depth features foreground today’s most innovative practitioners across art, design, photography, architecture, music and film. It has a readership of over 400,000 and national and international distribution. Apart from being present at the opening where her work will be exhibited, Laura will also be attending the “Aesthetica: Future Now Symposium” - a two-day symposium event coinciding with the opening of the Art Prize Exhibition, also hosted by Aesthetica. Through imaginative debates, career advice and cultural engagement, Future Now has developed into a key event in the UK arts calendar. It provides a platform for idea generation through panel discussions, portfolio reviews and key networking events with representatives from different art organisations.

Ruben Zahra will be attending 2 industry events to network with international operators to develop the export capacity of his work. He will be attending SUPERBOOTH in Berlin, from 23 – 25 April 2020. SUPERBOOTH is an annual trade featuring around 230 exhibitors with modular systems, synthesizers and other electronic music equipment as well as workshops and concerts. He will be attending this event to learn about this platform in view of promoting his production “Kafka’s Insect” which includes modular analogue synthesizers. He will also be attending the IETM meeting in Tromsø – Norway from 30 April – 3 May 2020, as a member of IETM - International network for contemporary performing arts. The 2020 IETM plenary meeting will be held in Tromsø – Norway. This is an opportunity to network with other artists and international cultural operators for the internationalisation of his work. While in Tromsø for the IETM plenary meeting, he has also scheduled meetings with festival directors and theatres in the region of Troms which includes 7 different cities with major cultural events such as The Arctic Light Festival, The Arctic Cathedral concert series and the Northern Lights Festival.

Launched in 2017, the Peter Reynolds Composer Studio is a week-long residency which runs alongside the Vale of Glamorgan Festival, in partnership with Cardiff University School of Music. The Peter Reynolds Composition Studio offers composers the opportunity to tap into a rich resource of expertise which will offer participants direct access to a range of composers, including the opportunity to write a string quartet for one of the UK’s leading professional ensembles, the Carducci Quartet - to have this work performed and recorded - additionally, to write a short piece for piano and percussion, which will be played and recorded by the specialist contemporary music duo George Barton (percussion) and Siwan Rhys (piano). Participants also have free access to the Vale of Glamorgan Festival concerts and events which is excellent for networking opportunities.

Project Title: Borsa Svizzera Della Spettacoli [Trade Fair, The Swiss Performance Art Exchange]

Rochelle, has been invited to be part of the 61st edition of the Swiss Stock exchange - Borsa Svizzera degli Spettacoli [BSDS]. This Swiss Performance Arts Exchange has been a prestigious event in the performing arts of Switzerland since 1975. This year it will take place in April 2020 at the KKThun Culture and Congress Centre. This annual trade fair gives the opportunity to 80 artists, including Rochelle to expose her latest physical theatre production, The Nose Knows. This trade fair aims to provide a platform for the selected artists to promote a 20-minute excerpt from their full production. The excerpt will be showcased on three consecutive days to various international agents, producers, festival managers and artistic directors. Additionally, this is a valuable platform for artists to present themselves to a wider audience. It is the perfect setting for partner exchange, reserving dates, negotiating contracts and bridging new opportunities for the seasonal programmes of Swiss theatres. There will be both established artists as well as young upcoming artists. These 3 days in Thun, will showcase current artistic theatrical activity, making it possible to follow developments and recognise new trends. At present, this is particularly valuable for the artistic career of Rochelle to observe what could be grasped in terms of networking and working opportunities within the genre of physical theatre.

Project Title: London Book Fair 2020: exploration, participation in the activities organised by the Literary Translation Centre, and search for collaborations

Claudine Borg will be visiting the London Book Fair in March 2020 in order to explore this key event in the book and publication industry. Several reasons motivate this project: first, as a literary translator, editor and translator trainer, she will be acquiring first-hand experience of this important fair. Second, the Literary Translation Centre (LTC) at the London Book Fair has established itself as a highly popular and successful hub for learning and debate for literary translators. The Centre also offers a comprehensive seminar programme covering a wide range of topics concerning literary translation such as training and advice for translators, studies, reports, information about grants for translation, and discussions focusing on particular genres such as translation novels and children’s literature. This project also builds on her ongoing project which promotes the translation of Maltese literature as the London Book Fair which is fertile ground to establish contacts with foreign translators, search for potential collaborations and promote the translation of our national literature.

Wioletta Kulewska will be participating in an Artist-in-Residence programme at The Hafnarborg Center of Culture and Fine Art in Iceland. This space has an apartment and studio space on the top floor of the museum’s building in the centre of Hafnarfjörður, southwest of Iceland. The program welcomes foreign artists of various disciplines. The Hafnarfjörður Centre of Culture and Fine Art was founded in 1983, becoming the home of the town’s art collection. Hafnarborg’s art residency programme is characterised by quality and resolve, as well as making a potent contribution to the positive image of the town and the identity of its residents. Exhibitions and events reflect contemporary trends and movements, promoting significant works and happenings at each given time. Hafnarborg maintains a dynamic collaboration with artists, museums, and other cultural institutions in Iceland and abroad. The exhibition programme in Hafnarborg is diverse and the museum holds 10–12 art exhibitions each year, displaying works significant to Icelandic art history, from treasured artwork by the pioneers of Icelandic art to experimental work by contemporary artists.

Denise Scicluna, Marco Scerri and Steven Scicluna are three Maltese creative’s operating in different artistic spheres and currently based in different countries: England, Scotland and Spain respectively. They will be participating in a 2-week residency at Brazza Art Residency in France as the starting point to producing a body of work exploring the concept of a journey as a meeting point of distinct personal point of views. They are also collaborating with the Gabriel Caruana Foundation to eventually show their work collectively at The Mill – Art, Culture and Crafts Centre, Birkirkara, as part of the Foundation’s artistic programme for 2020. This project concerns the ‘residency’ phase (phase 1 of 2) of this project. With all three of the artists approaching this experience from a widely diverse yet common angle, this residency and subsequent exhibition is seen as being a unique opportunity for opening a window into the often fascinating, mysterious and deeply personal world of the process of creating art. While the residency will act as a period for self-exploration, the artists will also be keen to share the insights gained throughout the project's process, with the general public, via the exhibition.

Angelcrypt (Malta) will be playing 3 dates in Greece on March 20, 21 & 22, headlining 2 gigs in Athens and Thessaloniki and participating in a Festival in Trilaka by the name of "Horns Up Festival" together with other important and well established international metal bands. They will be playing live at the Remedy Live Stage in Athens, during a set of 45 minutes and they will also play live at the “Horns Up Festival” in Trilaka at a set of 45 minutes. Over 15 other international metal bands will be performing at this festival, from countries such as Canada, USA, England, Serbia and there are music fans already planning their trip to Trikala from all over the world. Participation in international music festivals act as a gateway to boost their careers. They have already learned a lot from other international bands as to how to improve their song writing, how to improve their setlists, improve their stage show, as well improve their presence on social media platforms. This opportunity will undoubtedly offer the band the possibility to make lots of new contacts, and as a consequence open several doors to other festivals. As in previous travelling opportunities, this would be another big milestone for the band on the international market. As a consequence of the band's international engagements, they have also seen their following on social media platforms grow exponentially over the last years.

Project Title: Abril En Danza Festival (Spain)

Abril En Danza (a dance festival in Alicante, Spain) have invited Gabriella Davies to choreograph and perform a solo and group piece, and to lead two Masterclasses in Spain. The choreographic works will both be 20mins long and will be created in Malta in collaboration with the University of Malta’s Dance Department and performed during the Festival in Spain. Abril En Danza runs for 3-4 weeks during the period of International Dance Day that runs through the month of April. The choreography will consist of 4 dancers who will work in a creative and collaborative process with Gabriella as the choreographer. She will be re-working a previous creation of hers called 'Ack-Ack', a contemporary work which was originally created on the dance apprentices of ZfinMalta in 2017. Her solo piece revolves around the notion of the trail of life, a reflective exploration of experiences with a particular reference to notions of naivety and vulnerability. During the creative process, the concept will be supported through the use of symbolic imageries, reflective journals and other text. The movement material will be developed through rhythmical research and the use of somatic principles Ack-Ack is a 20 minute choreography that presents four dancers experiencing life through the blitz of World War II. Within the mist of fear, loss, starvation and life in shelters, the work manages to bring out humorous and joyful elements through the use of play. The work will take upon a physical-theatre approach in terms of movement quality, which will be inspired from research on Charlie Chaplin. The creative process will take a collaborative approach with four dancers and me as choreographer.

Patrick Fenech has been invited by the director of the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg in Germany to participate in the exhibition “Power! Light!” which opens its doors from the 16 May to the 13 September 2020. The exhibition will show artistic propositions that deliberately concentrate on political, ecological, economic or social statements. The development and use of light as a medium in art will be examined within the framework of overlapping thematic clusters: Utopia/Dystopia; Ecology/Biology; Violence/Power; Control/Surveillance. Patrick Fenech will be exhibiting his work entitled 'Last Word From Paradise', a video and light installation, which will form part of an international show along with other well known artists including Bruce Nauman, Damien Hirst, Joseph Beuys, Christian Boltanski, Douglas Gordan, Alfredo Jaar and others. 'Last Word From Paradise' installation deals with anthropocentrism, which is a major concept in the field of environmental ethics and eco-philosophy. Inspired by John Milton's epic poem 'Paradise Lost', the work brings the audience to reflect on its meditative quality - green moss and water are seemingly flowing from two opposite sides into a void or abyss only to be absorbed and neutralised by a red neon light.

Karl is currently in his final semester of Masters in Architecture at the Università degli Studi di Firenze and will be going on a research trip to the Biennale in May 2020. #EngageCREATIVES, a Malta-registered arts organisation, has been invited to present two of its projects during Nordic Music Days 2021 Festival which will be held in the Faroe Islands in April 2021. The organisation will be presenting Sonic Outreach, a community-centric sound art project that explores, celebrates and promotes the natural environment through sound with the use of audio technology and creative strategies; and Stillness, a solo performance of live sounds, electronics and field recordings created and performed by Renzo Spiteri. The four-day contemporary music and sound festival, is organised by the Association of Faroese Composers and the Danish Composers’ Society in collaboration with the Nordic House in the Faroe Islands. Using the theme ‘Roots’ the festival will consist of diverse styles of encounter between audiences and concert formats, with the aim of offering “strong and present experiences for all” and to “provide a breeding ground for the Faroe Islands’ unique musical traditions and the participating artists’ own deep roots to nurture each other.” The festival will be held in thirteen different venues in and around Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands.

Project Title: Gomarduli Residency in Georgia

Maria Concetta Cariello will be participating in a winter-long artists' residency in Gomarduli Zen Garden in Georgia, close to the city of Batumi. She will be joining from January to April 2021, for a three months dive into the research and creative process in the atmosphere of the Georgian mountains. The residency will combine a group of artists mostly from the dance and somatic field to come together and share individual practices, ideas, projects for research, and creation. Her project is to develop her own creation as a continuation of her previous research. Her area of research is towards the centrality of the body as the source of our experience, which becomes for her the core of her dance research and creation. She will be working to refine this area of interest and to explore her ideas with other bodies, minds, and souls around her, in a co-creation setting. She has been working on her own solo research during 2019-2020, and now she will develop that core idea and explore it not only on herself but also with a group of dancers with the intent of creating a group choreographic piece.
