Glen Zammit will be attending a master class in Germany, offering conservatory students the possibility to work together with renowned professors, where they can further develop their skills, and receive advice for their continued studies. The course does not focus exclusively on private lessons, but rather emphasizes audition training and ensemble playing. In addition to working on and practicing audition excerpts, actual audition situations are simulated. Such audition training is a good opportunity to prepare for auditions, and to gain experience and routine through simulated auditions, with the aim of warding off nervousness and anxiety that may build up in an actual audition situation.

Project title: Freedom Prison

Moveo dance Company will be participating in “Freedom Prison”, a 10-day festival that forms part of the Aarhus European Capital of Culture in 2017. The festival takes place in a former state prison, and artists are invited from all over Europe to participate in this cultural experience. Apart from showcasing their individual performances, participants will also create a final performance based on the concept of Freedom vs. Imprisonment. Participant will display their own performances, and will also perform a joint choreography called the freedom Prison Show. This show will run for two days with approximately 8000 spectators each night, and will take place within the walls of the former prison. Moveo Dance Company will perform ‘Ara Gejja’, which revolves around this concept of Freedom vs. Imprisonment, through the distinction between traditional childhood games and today’s technological games. The freedom experienced by children, as they used to play openly in the past, creates a contrast to today’s static and inanimate gaming children experience on a daily basis. Traditional games are portrayed through dance with specific focus on Maltese games such as ‘Ara Gejja il Mewt Ghalik’, ‘Dawra Durella’, and ‘Bum Bum Il-Bieb’.

Project title: Land-art project and an environmentally themed video art project

During the two-months Artist Residency in Iceland Evgletta will seek to complete two projects based on the research which had been conducted in previous residencies. The first project is the continuation of the research that had been conducted for a five-part video installation project called “Now no longer – Now not yet”, which was an interdisciplinary work, bridging geology, video art and performance art. In this site specific installation the beneficiary will further explore Earth movements and plate tectonics. The second project is part of the Three Islands projects where water is explored as a by-product of human activity and observed as a driving force for contemporary migration. Here the water circularity will be followed by the circularity of the human journey as a refuge. For this project, Zhanna will perform various water-related activities that also poetically connect to the global sea rise. The artwork will be a mixture of land art, performance art and video art.

Project title: TimeSlips Creative Storytelling

Charlotte Stafrace will be attending a training course in Edinburgh with Professor Anne Basting. The training consists of two sessions. The first session consists of a lecture at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, which will focus on the positive impact of community-building projects with older people, with the aim of creating a sustainable network to bring meaningful engagement to older adults who are at risk of isolation. The second session consists of a creative storytelling workshop that brings together artists, healthcare professionals and cultural organisations to find out more about “TimeSlips”: a successful international approach to embedding creativity in care provision. The approach which will be explored at the workshop is evidence-based and person-centred, and it is used by care professionals and artists in older people’s services and care homes around the world.

Project title: Participatory attendance at the New York International Childrens’ Film Festival

Sandra will be attending the New York International Children’s Film Festival in preparation for the next edition of the Little Rock People Children’s Film Festival (LRP), forming part of the Kinemastik International Short Film festival programme held annually in Malta. This festival is entering into its 9th edition this year, and Sandra is now aiming to seek out further innovative and thought provoking ways of introducing the media of film, animation and documentaries to the young local audience in Malta. The aim of this mobility project is to make contacts, but also to observe and attain a further understanding of the organisational and programming aspects of this prestigious festival in order to use the festival as a model for the festival locally. The beneficiary believes that this mobility project would offer insight, inspiration and possible collaborations to further the festival and ultimately the youngsters who will be attending it.

Project title: Devising Dance Performance with adults with learning dis/abilities: an exploration of dis/ability, dance and artistry, with special reference to Opening Doors dance group

Ilona will be presenting her Dance Studies research at the symposium entitled “The Dance Fields – Staking a claim for Dance Studies in the 21st century”, being held between the 19-22nd April 2017, convened by the Centre for Dance Research (C-DaRE), Coventry University; Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Dance (CIRID), De Montfort University and Centre for Dance Research, University of Roehampton, UK. Ilona’s research will be delivered in a form of a lecture presentation, where contexts and findings will be shared with others participating in the symposium. The aim in presenting this work is to create a space for discussion and sharing of ideas, specifically on disability arts, on how accessible they are, what training opportunities are being provided for individuals with a disability interested in pursuing their studies or possibly a career in dance, the opportunity for inclusive dance programmes and/or performances. These themes are all pertinent into forming possible collaborations with international practitioners working in the field.

Project title: Recording of Mahler Symphony No 10 (reconstructed, arranged and orchestrated by Michelle Castelletti) by John Storgårds and the Lapland Chamber Orchestra for the international classical record label BIS

Michelle Castelletti will be recording her re-created version of Mahler’s Tenth symphony with the record label BIS in Sweden. Following a detailed study of the existing Mahler sketches and fragments of this uncompleted work, Castelletti will re-create the symphony for chamber orchestra, retaining the authenticity found in the Mahler manuscripts. She will be present for the recording sessions with the Lapland Chamber Orchestra under the baton of John Storgårds for the international label BIS. During her stay in Finland and Sweden, she will be there ensuring the success of the project as a whole, taking care of any changes that need to be done, such as decisions regarding the score, instrumentation and orchestration.

Nadia Mifsud Mutschler will be participating in the international poetry festival ‘Voci Lontane, Voci Sorelle’ in Florence. This literature festival forms part of the “Estate Fiorentina” consisting of a wide cultural calendar with various activities and events throughout the entire summer. The activities and events are from different fields of art (poetry, theater, music, cinema, photography and visual arts). The festival is organized by the Laboratorio Nuova Buonarroti Association, a cultural association that aims to strengthen the relationship between the locals of Florence and other Italian and International artists, while fostering curiosity on culture and the creative process.

Project title: Mediterranea 18 Young Artists Biennale

Inizjamed will be participating in “Mediterranea 18, Young Artists Biennale” in Albania. Hosted for the first time between the cities of Tirana and Durres the Biennale will bring together around 230 Euro-Mediterranean artists and will create opportunities for young artists to enable mobility, exchange, mutual understanding, intercultural dialogue, collaboration and training. Aidan Celeste and Rachelle Deguara will be representing Malta through their literary creations ‘Houellebecq By The Sea’ and ‘Replika/Eku’ respectively while Valerie Visanich is part of the project ‘A Natural Oasis?’ whose final outcome will be showcased at the Biennale. These artists will be exporting their works and showcasing it in a Euro-Mediterranean context.

Gilbert Calleja will be attending the ‘iF lab’ training course in Belgium and France to further develop and work on his documentary project (webdoc) about a local fisherman, his family, his boat and the extended community in Marsaxlokk. ‘iF lab’ is aimed at non‐fiction storytellers exploring new narrative formats and the project focuses on bringing professionals from various disciplines to work towards the production of a new documentary based on interactivity. ‘iF lab’is based on guided team work, where each team reconceptualises the initial pitch of a project, redesigns a prototype and produces a new documentary. Two separate one‐week intensive sessions (story booster and prototype booster) are dedicated to the idea development and the production of the work. These are then followed by online tutorials and guidance.

Project title: Out of place in an institutional art space? A comparative research on cultural participation in Malta and Portugal

Valerie Visanich will be participating in the European Sociological Association International Conference being held in Athens. Together with the Portuguese sociologist Jose Soares Neves, she will present preliminary results of a comparative study on cultural participation in Malta and Portugal. This international platform is essential to continue the development of an academic study with the intention to be published in peer-reviewed academic journals. Valerie will also be meeting the Committee members of the European Sociological Association to discuss the coordination of the 10th Midterm International, the European Sociological Association Conference focused on the Sociology of the Arts, to be held in Malta in 2018.

Steve Hili will be performing his show called “Burning Love. To the ground” at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August 2017, at a venue called The 30 Seater Nightcap. He had debuted this show at the Brighton Fringe last year and he will be previewing it in London in July 2017, before taking it up to Edinburgh. As well as doing his own show in Edinburgh, he is also offering an opportunity for Maltese comedians to perform at the Fringe, by giving them the chance to do a few minutes of their own stand-up comedy before his show. The show has also been included in the official programme.

More or Less Theatre will be taking its show ‘The Complete History of Europe (More or Less)’ for a full run at the 2017 edition of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August. ‘The Complete History of Europe (More or Less)’ is one of the educational family comedies that is offered in the More or Less Theatre repertoire of plays. Originally created for the 2013 edition of the Żigużajg Arts Festival for Children and Young People, the show has been performed regularly ever since, along with the theatre group’s other repertoire plays. Apart from gaining further international experience, the company will also use this as a networking exercise in which to build international contacts and communicate with possible future collaborators.

Lumen is an art collective exploring the themes of astronomy and light. During this residency, the artist intends to carry out a project that is in line with his current body of work titled ‘Dislocated Geographies’. His works consist of large format charcoal drawings, and audio/visual installations, that depart from metaphysical and scientific theories. Through a juxtaposition of images and chance during execution, what starts as storytelling, becomes an exploration into fantastic, dislocated geographies. This puts under analysis concepts like time and chance to establish how these determine the interpretation of the past and sometimes forecast the future.

Karl Schembri will be participating in the 4th edition of the International Poetry Festival in Lima, Peru. The festival is regarded to be among the most important in Latin and Central America and it is held annually, gathering poets from over twenty countries from America, Europe, Asia and Africa. Karl will be reading poems in Maltese and in English from his works “Passju taht ix-Xita” (2013) and “Remember the Future” (2013) in several locations in the city of Lima as well as in surrounding villages. These will be translated into Spanish and presented there too. The organisers of the festival have already started publishing some of his works on journals and online portals, building more attention and exposure that will help gather the attention of Latin American publishers.
