As a part of XENI project, the next ACMlab in collaboration with Teatru Malta will be a discussion with veterans in the local theatre sphere, from actors, to critics to set designers which will be discussing various subjects relating to stage design and their experience on stage.

The theatre world is constantly evolving:  new materials, new technologies, new ideas, all of which require the abilities of a capable set designer to see each artistic vision through from design to stage. 

The set plays a pivotal role in the narrative of any production, a role which calls for a collaborative relationship between set painters, set builders and light designers. 

XENI is a retrospective project curated by Italian set designer Romualdo Moretti whose worked with the most prominent theatre companies across Malta and Gozo. This project is produced by Teatru Malta in collaboration with Spazju Kreattiv with the intention of providing audiences with a rare backstage pass into the past decade of local scenography.

The exhibition will feature sets, props and models from past productions belonging to 12 local and international set designers produced for various theatre production companies in the last 10 years.

Our speakers will be:

Chris Gatt has been part of the Maltese theatrical scene for over 30 years. Starting off as an actor in his mid-20’s he soon moved to directing, equally at  home in tragedy or comedy,  straight plays or musicals. He is also happy to work in mainstream theatre as well as the fringe, working in conventional and less conventional spaces. In 1999 he was appointed the CEO of St James Cavalier, Centre for Creativity, Malta’s millennium project (now redubbed Spazju Kreattiv)and the country’s first state funded organisation dealing with the contemporary art scene. In that role he oversaw an extensive artistic programme of contemporary theatre, music, visual arts and cinema, as well as incorporating science and community-based projects. In 2013 Gatt moved to freelance work as a theatre director, and offering practical educational sessions in the performing arts. He also freelances as a light designer and is an associate member of the Association of Light Designers, UK.


Adrian Mamo graduated in architecture in 1989 and has been involved in theatre for about 40 years. He has designed about 60 productions for various theatre companies and agencies including MADC, Masquerade Theatre Company, Atturi, Actinghouse, TheatreEncore, Staġun Teatru Malti, CHOGM and others. Hi latest productions include Jiena Nħobb Inti Tħobb, Ċittadin Vassalliil-Kappillan ta’ Malta and Faith, Hope u Charity for Stagun Teatru Malti, Children of a Lesser God and Antigone for Theatrencore, Phantom of the Opera for Grapevine Music and Il-Kbir Għadu Ġej for Balzunetta Productions. Adrian Mamo was chairman of the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts between 2006 and 2103; he teaches Theatre Set Design at the Department of Theatre Studies at the University of Malta and currently occupies the post of President of the Malta Society of Arts.

Martina Caruana is a graduate in Music and History of Art from the University of Malta (1993), where she furthered her studies in History of Art with a specialization in illuminated manuscripts in Malta. After obtaining her PhD from the Sorbonne Paris IV (2000) she continued to research illuminated books in Malta and has since been invited to lecture, participate in conferences/projects and publish in several reputable fora. She has been an educator for over 25 years and, even when occupying a managerial role, never left the classroom. Her experience ranges from primary through to postgraduate education in private and state, Maltese and European contexts, with experience in formal VET education dating back to 2001 when she collaborated with MCAST in her capacity as Director of Studies of the Malta Centre for Restoration's Institute for Conservation and Restoration Studies. She eventually joined MCAST, where she pursued her formal education in VET education (2013), 9 years ago as Senior Lecturer II in Contextual Studies at the Institute for the the Creative Arts. There she later also coordinated the Fine Arts, Performing Arts and Cultural Heritage Skills programmes, and was eventually appointed Institute Director in 2018.

Giovann Attard is 52 years old and he was born in Sannat Gozo. He attended the local Primary State School and Laura Vicuna (Church School), Secondary at the Sacred Heart Seminary (Church School) and State Sixth Form in Gozo. He read B. Ed. (HONS) at the University of Malta from September 1988 to September 1992 and started teaching at Qormi St George Primary School (state school) for five years. Then he entered the Drama Unit as a Teacher for fifteen years and as Educational Officer in charge of Drama and Theatre in Schools around Malta for the last seven years. His interest in Theatre and all the arts that go with it  started from his early days. He took part in many plays, Musicals and Operettas in Gozo. When he taught at the Primary school he wrote and directed five original musicals. All students in his classes under his direction put up the costumes, scenery, acting, etc that were needed. He worked on: Id-Daqqaq ta’ Ħamelinn (1994), Il-Prinċep u l-Fqir (1995), Ali Baba (1996), Il-Pinguo u d-Draguni (1997), Taita bin il-Faragħuni (1998). He wrote the Musical Eroj (1998), wrote and directed the musicals  Twemmin 2000 (2000), Georgius (2003, 2016), AD 1062 (2011), and directed Naħal tal-Imħabba (2018, 2019). Giovann wrote, directed and worked on scenery of various Theatre works and is still active in his writing of plays, songs, and with his involvement in the Theatre scene.
