Applicant: Miriam Calleja
Reference Number: CEPT-10-20-4532
Project title: Collaboration with Munich poet to present a project at Shamrock Festival
Amount Awarded: €451
The organisers of Shamrock Festival invited Miriam Calleja to present her work during their festival in Munich in October 2020. They would like her to collaborate with poet Karin Fellner during the preceding months, so as to present a body of work in German, English, and Maltese. In order to do this, they have secured an artist residency at Villa Waldberta (in Munich) for her during the months of September and October 2020. During this residency, she will be able to work with Karin closely in order to fulfill the request by Shamrock Festival. This will entail the creation of a project based on a brief given to them by the festival organisers. They have requested that the poetry (or other bodies of work) they create together or separately during the course of their work together to be presented in their native languages (Maltese and English).
Applicant: Ryan Falzon
Reference Number: CEPT-16-20-4539
Project title: We Lost the War (Berlin)
Amount Awarded: €7000
Ryan Falzon will be exhibiting his work at the Berlin gallery OKK Raum 29. His art collection WE LOST THE WAR deals with the idea of loss on various levels. It deals with the violation and exploitation of the notion of a national identity, with references to local customs, traditions, icons and events. Alongside are treated personal losses such as lost love and broken relationships. The themes are tackled from the artist’s subjective point of view throughout the whole project. Conceptually, the paintings included in WE LOST THE WAR construct an iconography of celebration - downfalls as much as victories - through layers of deceptive bright paint and pop art tropes. The exhibition will be co-curated by Michael Fenech, who originally curated the 2017 exhibition in Malta, together with Pablo Hermann, owner of OKK Raum 29. The opening date for this exhibition is 25th September 2020, an excellent timing for an exhibition in Berlin as this will follow up the interest in art scene generated through the Art Week, which is happening between 9 – 13th September 2020. The exhibition is set to run until 18th October 2020. Hermann selected the 25th September for the opening night for WE LOST THIS WAR as to happen during Kolonie Wedding. Wedding being the district in which OKK gallery is situated, Kolonie Wedding is a much anticipated biannual district art tour.

Applicant: Big Friends Guggen Musik A.D. 2008
Reference Number: CEPT-16-20-4533
Project title: Big Friends Guggen Musik Malta, Aeolian Islands Tour 2020
Amount Awarded: €8000
The Big Friends Guggen Musik Malta, Aeolian Islands tour 2020 is part of the band’s plan to expose Maltese music, that is specifically arranged for this band, on an international platform and to give band members the opportunity to perform outside of the Maltese Islands. The Big Friends Guggen Musik Band was invited to perform alongside other international bands, and this invitation is a direct result of the band’s performance during the Carnival festivities in 2019 and the band’s Annual Concert of the same year. The word Guggen is mostly used in Austria, Switzerland and Germany and refers to the presentation of joyful music. This musical style involves the playing of both traditional and innovative musical instruments (primarily divided between brass and percussions) and together with singing and dancing, this contributes to a complete transformation of popular musical pieces to engage the audiences, with diverse backgrounds, in a festive spirit. The band makes use of innovative musical instruments that are not normally used in traditional Maltese village bands such as the Sousaphones washboards and temple blocks, which gives the Big Friends Guggen Musik Band a unique and innovative touch.
