Project Title: KIRANA - Children's Opera Project

KIRANA tour at The Danish Opera (Aarhus) and The Royal Danish Theatre (Copenhagen) in Denmark and the ARENA Festival of New Music in Riga, Latvia.
KIRANA is an outreach project that has been designed to connect children with professional artists. Artists from Malta conduct a series of workshops with children from the city where the project is taking place, leading to an interdisciplinary performance of music, dance and digital animation. The Maltese team (composer, pianist and technical director) also collaborates with other artists from the city (choreographer, musicians, art instructor and actress) so that the project fosters transnational cooperation between local and international artists. This will be the first tour for the KIRANA project. Over the past four years the project has developed from a school production supported by the Kreattiv to Żigużajg International Arts Festival for Children & Young People and three international bookings in France, Germany and Italy. The long-term plan is to establish the project as an ongoing initiative targeting major international festivals.

Project Title: Simshar - France Release & Tour

Simshar is a feature film based on true events, telling the story of a Maltese fishing family who get stranded in the Mediterranean. Their fate intertwines with that of migrants making the crossing from Africa to Europe, with tragic consequences. The Simshar France release tour will involve the collaboration with French distributor VisoSfeir, multiple exhibitors, press, established and upcoming stars in independent film arena and young Maltese graphic designer Ian Gatt. The tour will include a minimum of one week theatrical release in 3 to 5 cinemas. As per standard distribution practice, should the attendance during the first week be good the release will be extended accordingly per cinema. During the release a Q& A Tour as well as a Paris Premiere will be taking place to boost the release’s profile and encurage attendance.

Project Title: Raphael Vella: Recent Works

Exhibition of recent contemporary drawings about art as a life-saver or cure, by Raphael Vella at the building hosting the EU delegation to the United States in Washington D.C., as part of the project called Conversations in Culture. The EU Delegation in Washington D.C. has the added advantage of having international contacts and disseminates information about its Conversations in Culture programme through invitations, in the press and on its website. A selection of these drawings will be shown in Summer at the Architecture Project offices in Valletta, before they leave for the US.
While in the US, Raphael Vella is also planning to visit the well known New York Arts Residency and Studios (NARS) foundation in Brooklyn, New York, in view of possible residency and exchanges with Malta, through the possible involvement of Divergent Thinkers and other projects.

Project Title: 'Islander' programme presentation at Zanzibar International Film Festival(ZIFF 2016)

Angelique Muller, the curator of the “Islanders” film programme which will be presented at the Valletta Film Festival in June 2016, has received an invitation to showcase part of the 2016 selection at the Zanzibar International Film Festival. “Islanders” is a curated programme made of films from or about islands. ZIFF is East Africa’s largest film, music and arts festival, bringing new talents together from all over the world. Each year, some of the most captivating and cutting-edge cinema from Africa and beyond is screened in venues across the island, from world-premiers to local shorts, with a long history of showcasing the highest quality film from all over the world and providing a platform for international artists to meet and exchange. Each year ZIFF invites a foreign festival curator to showcase part of their programming during the festival week in a program called “festival of festivals.” The curated “Islanders” programme for VFF would be of great appeal for ZIFF festival audiences and has the potential to place Malta in the limelight. This is also a great opportunity to showcase Maltese work to international audiences and place Malta on the international map of cultural events through international media exposure.

Sarah Vella will be exporting her cross-cultural dance performance ME(et) YOU to Germany in October 2016. The performance incorporates video projection and live music and it brings together artists with different values that come from various backgrounds. It is a collaboration between two dancers, a musician and a filmographer, from Malta, Norway and France. The piece is an intimate dance performance that explores the individual experiences that occur during the first moment of encounter. How do we greet others? How can body language communicate these experiences? In what way do social and geographical norms play a part? The aim of the piece is to create an awareness around the moment of the first meeting.

Project title: Weeping Silence Italian Tour: A nautical journey with Ahab!

Weeping Silence’s fourth album ‘Opus IV Oblivion’ will be exported to Italy in November 2016. This will be the band’s first Italian tour. The tour consists of three internationally-renowned bands, travelling together, and is headlined by German nautically-themed band ‘Ahab’. This musical act has garnered incredible reputation for their maritime lyrics recounting tales of sea expeditions, such as Moby Dick (band name ref. Cpt Ahab), the Glen Carrig and other epics. The Weeping Silence album to be showcased was released by international music label Massacre Records (Germany), who are leaders in the rock/metal genre. The album revolves around the theme of hope, the afterlife and the human philosophical struggle with the self.

Project title: ŻIEME at the Kalmar Museum of Contemporary Art, Sweden

ŻIEME, the live-size bronze statue of a three-legged horse, first exhibited at Valletta City Gate in August 2014 for VIVA, inspired the artist and the curator to initiate a ‘world tour’ project. This first public-touring installation is hosted by Kalmar konstmuseum where ZIEME will be positioned in the centre of Kalmar City public park, facing Kalmar Castle. This project will be centered around it’s temporary installation at culturally significant locations around the world. Along with the touring project, the organisers will arrange panel discussions between the artist and local cultural representatives; professionals and experts, who will be asked to contribute essays relating to the installation and its central theme of displacement of power.

Project title: GAULITANUS CHOIR CONCERT-TOUR – PRATO (ITALY)

Gaulitanus Choir will be travelling to Prato Italy where it will be presenting material from it’s repertoire – which includes also Maltese works. With the performances taking places in churches – whether concerts or animation of the litrugy – the chosen repertoire will be sacred, technically doable with the number of choristers joining the concert-tour. The Gaulitanus Choir’s host is the Associazione Artes of Prato, Italy. The Association is an important institution involved with the organisation of concerts & Master Classes particularly in the region and also has it’s own orchestra. The venue will be the historic Chiesa dello Santo Spirito – in the centre of Prato – a popular concert venue.

Project Title: Participation & Presentation of Maltese Film Projects in the International Marketplace

A number of Maltese films in various stages will be presented at the international film marketplace. The markets are essential platforms in order to present the film projects to potential creative collaborators, sales agents and distributors. Joshua Cassar Gaspar will be attending the American Film Market, the American Film Institute (AFI) and the European film Market (EFM) with the films ‘Bus Stop’, ‘Valinda’, ‘Blind’ and ‘The Maltese Fighter’. The AFM (American Film Market) is a market where Over 8,000 industry leaders converge for eight days of deal--‐making, screenings, seminars, and networking events take place while the AFI (American Film Institute) is a non-profit educational arts organization, and provides leadership in film and television. The European Film Market(EFM) is based in Berlin and is the business epicentre of one of the most important international film festivals in the world, the Berlinale. The American Film Market, American Film Institute as well as the European Film Market are highly reputable events in the film calendar that cater for people who are serious about the film industry globally.

Project title: Do Re Mi Fa

Dragonfly Films will be launching their first feature film Do Re Mi Fa to the international market in New York. Cinemaflix Distribution has offered the publicity/exhibition package to the company and the promotional package provides an important element of marketing an independent film, mainly the access to film critics of major publications in the U.S. The project involves a well-defined activity, namely exhibiting the film in a New York cinema, having it reviewed by renowned critiques of leading publications in the U.S. obtaining the services of a renowned film publicist, a Google adverts campaign and digital cable distribution. In the first week of screening the directors of Dragonfly Films Ltd. will also be networking with other film producers to seek financing for their second feature film.
