Following the success of W.O.M.E.N. - St. Monica School's project completed during 2018-9 the concept will now be taken to the next level. For W.O.M.E.N., interviews with 26 women were filmed and a series of video clips was produced. The end product was much acclaimed and the feedback received was very encouraging, such that it was decided to move on to another phase of the project. Through this phase the students will interview more women and publish a book. The students will be exposed to the process involved in Human narrative journalism, the print media and book publishing, to give them space to come up with innovative ideas of how the printed medium can be appealing to all in a digitalised world and above all to be inspired by women of success.

Project Title: Celebrating Diversity

This project involves a team of professionals who will explore diversity with the students. The boys, will discover what it means to live with a neuroAtypical condition, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. They will use this insight to then create colourful, artistic tote bags out of recycled materials. A clip will be produced, with the guidance of Pierre Ellul from Falkun Films, to document the process and raise awareness about the condition. Both the bags and the clip will be exhibited in the school at the end of the project and again at the Science in the City Festival in 2020.

Project title: My Journey through Art

Together with local artist James Micallef Grimaud, this project focuses on both local artists as well as foreign artists using different media. The students will research works of local artists as well as foreign artist and three artists will be chosen. A selection of the works will be recreated and used to embellish three corridors at. A number of works will be selected and recreated to develop one large mural in the corridor. The local community will be involved in the creation of the canvas through recycled material.

Project title: Mind Matters

Under the guidance of professionals students will produce an animation which will be an integral aspect, showcased in a live performance in April, which will be co-written by students. This performance will surround ideas about stressful situations and anxiety. As a result of heightened awareness through workshops, presentations and curriculum lessons, the school aims to reduce the anxiety felt by many of students and encourage healthy discussion about mental health issues.

Project title: Let there be light

This project will seek to incorporate science and art. The project 'Let there be LIGHT' will be divided into five main phases. Throughout these phases the students will work with various professionals, namely a University of Malta Professional, More or Less Theatre, Patsy Chetchuti and Moveo dance company and Mark Edward Mifsud, the main restorer and owner of M.M Chandelier Restorations. Throughout the months leading to the final performance the students will be responsible for writing creative writing pieces, create choreographies, record music and create props which will all be used in the final production.

Project title: Creating an awareness about endemic flora and fauna through murals

The project will commence with research about local flora and fauna at Wied Ghollieqa, as well as discussing the importance of water for valleys tying up with the work done by our EcoSchools team. Nature Trust will also be invited to give a talk at the school. Following this research, they will the participate in workshops by street artist James Micallef Grimaud, during which students will learn about street art as a contemporary and public art form. This together with the initial research will lead to the production of a mural. Different teams of students will need to work together as the work progresses from the research to the planning and then the implementation of the project.

Project title: Saving Our Land by Keeping Our Roots

The young people are concerned by the state of the planet adults are leaving behind: global warming; soil, water and air pollution; the loss of biodiversity in ecosystems; lack of proper management of household and industrial waste... In a small island like Malta, the effects can be more extreme, but the actions of individuals can also be decisive promoters of change. In this project the students will send a message about sustainability, recycling and upcycling while creating reusable fabric bags for day-to-day shopping. The tote bags will be produced in a workshop organized by the artists Stephanie Borg and Paul Bark. The students will apply their creativity playing with colours and using other shapes that connect to the cultural and architectural heritage of Malta. Stencil and stamp techniques will be used with special emphasis in using natural materials or using materials intended to be disposed of. The school group Bye Bye Plastic Bags will lead the discussion of the effect of plastic in the marine ecosystem and ways of reducing plastic consumption on the island. The produced designs will be printed on paper to form part of a school exhibition. Part of the finished bags will be shared between workshop participants while others will be sold to the school community to raise awareness for the effect of plastic bag in the marine ecosystem and to raise funds for the Environmental Club Bye Bye Plastic Bags.

Project title: Making dreams reality

The project will involve young people with different abilities aged from 16-22 attending Maria Regina College DM Attard Young Adult Education Resource Centre. They will be working with three creative partners supported by staff members to develop a multidisciplinary performance involving music, dance and percussion. This project will provide the possibility to our students to attend dance and percussion sessions organised by Opening Doors dance practitioner Mr Douglas Comley and by Tribali percussionist Mr Peter Paul Galea. They will also work with Ms Phyilisienne Brincat. On singing and music. Students will have the opportunity to attend weekly singing sessions of 1.5 hours each. The project will culminate to a performance event held in a public space in May 2020.

‘Id- dinja ta’ madwari u Jien’ is an interdisciplinary project aimed at introducing performing and visual arts to the students of the Early Years and apply it in context within their schoolwork. The project looks at the art forms singly and also holistically, students learn basic knowledge and understanding in relation to the art form and at the end create a final performance based on a theme that the students would be currently working on in class. The theme will be based on the different aspects of the earth and its conservation. The medium for this expression will be movement, music, storytelling, art and art installation. The final performance will be showcased to the other school children and also to the parents.

Fusion takes on a social theme and represents it through a combination of an original mime and a music composition. Fusion will unleash the creativity and imagination of the student participants who come up with a theme and develop it with the help of the creative practitioners – a composer, choreographer and an artistic director. The work will eventually be performed to the sound of a young and energetic Big Band Brothers Junior playing live during several performances to the wider School community eliciting deep emotions and discussion along the way.

Project title: Reinterpreting the Past

The project “Reinterpreting the Past” was born out of students suggestion to renovate the school canteen area. A discussion between teachers and administration lead to the idea that the history surrounding St. Edward’s College and its original use as a hospital would be the take off for this project. The murals that would be created at the end of the project aim to push unity, diversity and co-existance, which are crucial for a school where more than 30% of its population are foreigners from all over the world. Supporting the images painted in the canteen, a booklet written by Professor J. Portelli would be printed and distributed in the Junior and Middle school, to help students from different levels understand the meaning behind the murals that will be placed in the canteen. The collaborator will be Chris De Souza Jensen, aka Seapuppy, a renowned graffiti artist.

Project title: Spreading Respect through music and dance

Music and dance students from Year 9 at MVPAS will be actively involved in exploring and utilising tools to innovatively craft a choreography based on contemporary dance as well as compose a musical score. Guided by ZfinMalta as well as MVPAS music and dance teachers, the young aspiring artists will be given the tools to create and perform a work collaboratively and will experience the process and journey of creating and performing a piece. The theme of the work will revolve around “Respect” - for the environment around us and towards each other. This process will encourage the students to immerse themselves in devising collaboratively – with all it’s ups and downs. Through collaboration on this project, the participants will understand the importance of the individual within the collective and come face to face with the challenges and the high points of working within a team. Simultaneously, music and dance students will get to discover what it means to devise in both art forms and how compositional and performative tools in music and dance can be shared, thus blurring the lines/boundaries of the forms themselves.

Project title: FAMOUS: Facts And Myths abOUt STEM

Year 5 students will embark on a STEAM journey, to dispel myths through existing facts, in STEM education. The aim of the project is to spark students' interests towards these subjects whilst promoting a growth mindset. Science, Digital Literacy, Art and Maths teachers will kick start the project by introducing students to remarkable international women in STEM fields. Students will then have the opportunity to participate in workshops with Ms. Monique Sciortino who is a statistician and Dr. Sarah Cuschieri who is a doctor and president of the Malta Obesity Association. More or Less Theatre will train students to perform in front of a live audience and take out their creative and funny self. They will present the international and local female role models and their extraordinary work, including any resources they have done in class, in front of a live audience. The comedic presentation will be repeated in Science in the Citadel to enthuse a wider audience.

Project title: Il-Gwerra f'Ghawdex

The students will learn about how life was in Gozo during the second world war. They will get information from a variety of sources namely a history expert, elderly who have experienced the war and information and documentaries available from the libraries. Based on the information collected, a short documentary will be filmed. This documentary will feature the war as lived through the eyes of the interviewees. Complementing this experience the school will be working with an Italian institution (CSER Foundation - Rome) who will provide our school with an experience of migration using visual reality glasses (OCULUS) where the students will virtually live in the shoes of a refugee or migrant and seeing scenes shot in actual key places of human mobility.

Project title: Going Green

Through the project students will visit local green areas to collect organic materials this will expose the students to nature while giving them a practical activity. Cuttings and collected seeds will be requested from families and staff and they will be grown in recycled containers until ready to transplant. The organic materials collected will then be used in the second part of the project to create texture on the surface of clay being used to hand build plant pots. Over the remainder of the scholastic year plant pots of various sizes and shapes will be produced. The pieces will be painted by the students and then clear glazed making them very decorative. Plant pots for window sills, individual hanging pots and a large scale structure to create a vertical garden for the school. The conclusion of the project will see the pots being planted with the cuttings and seeds that have been grown by the students in their other classes and the installation and distribution of the pots in the school and local home with the intention of creating a greener and more vibrant environment through their creative endeavours.

Project title: Fragile

Fragile entails a community exhibition project where human vulnerability is transferred into a tactile and auditive experience. Until today the shipping of goods happens in tailored wooden crates on which universal symbols are attached. These symbols often refer to the vulnerable content inside the crate. Fragile uses this metaphor: a wooden armour for travelling through life. The symbols refer to the human vulnerability encased inside. Inside the crate there will be gypsum cast of human hands representing the fragile hands, hands with stigmata and touchable wounds. Fragile will provide a poetic and symbolic way to talk about the student's vulnerabilities and stigma’s.
