Project Title: Ohlomli - Holma
Amount awarded: € 4,999.90
Oħlomli ħolma seeks to put together middle school students and Valletta senior citizen artists to engage in a productive conversation. Using this conversation as a springboard, the project will guide and engage students with the process of producing a serialised programme that would be made available on the College’s YouTube Channel. The project’s primary aim is to help young minds familiarise themselves with the different creative and technical facets of the production process. Students will first be given an overview of the whole process then assigned to six different teams that are: camera crew, sound crew, editing, stage design and production, stage manager and photographers. Students will ultimately deliver the necessary materials used for the programme itself. During this process, students will garner a degree of familiarity with specific media-related skill sets. This will act as a hands-on exploratory experience for them to test out the potential viability of furthering their studies in these areas. Even though a degree of play and exploration will be encouraged, students will be guided to take roles within the project and trained to effectively produce and deliver the required assets relative to their role. A by-product of this process will be for the students to see how a production is divided into smaller, focused tasks and how a team of individuals rely inherently on each other to achieve a final, cohesive product.

Project Title: EI thru AI (Kreattiv II)
Amount awarded: € 4,895.00
Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the ability to be aware and acknowledge one’s own emotions and those of others. EI is an ability that is deemed necessary in today’s world and is essential for social interactions, self-awareness, and self-control. On the other hand, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a product of the progress of the technological world. AI is generally described as a method of simulating human intelligence through programming of machines. AI can be used in different settings (e.g. manufacturing) for different purposes.
This project is about delving into the importance of EI as a tool for communication, and how communication can be expressed through the use of AI components. The participants will make use of basic 3D design and coding technologies to create a human head prototype. The prototype will be coded to display basic emotions through facial expressions (e.g. sadness, happiness, etc.). One prototype will be created, and this creation can in itself be utilised as a tool to enhance the learning of the abstract concept of EI. Moreover, the concept of Emotions, is a prominent learning outcome in the PSCD syllabus.
This project aims to:
a) Strengthen the understanding and the importance of being aware of own emotions and those of others;
b) Increase the knowledge and interest in AI, and how AI can be used in creative projects;
c) Instil creativity with the use of modern technology devices, whilst learning more about EI;
d) Expose students to personal skills such as teamwork, initiative, innovation, experimentation, and originality.

Reference number: KRE2020-06-20-4936
Project Title: Uproot - Kreattiv for Middle Schools
Amount awarded: € 3,349
This project will explore the issue of migration from a wider perspective. Students will become aware that people migrate to different areas/countries for a variety of reasons. Students will have the opportunity to discuss this issue with different persons who moved from their birth countries to a different country which they now call home. During the first phase of the project, a workshop will be held for all school students. Each group of students will listen to the stories of migrants in a workshop held in collaboration with JRS, participate in a writing workshop with Simone Spiteri and an art session with Mario Abela where they will be exposed to storyboarding. In addition, they will also be meeting with those who moved away from or to Gozo.
During the second phase of the project, the writer Simone Spiteri, will workshop the ideas and concepts brainstormed during Phase 1 and eventually produce a docu-story. A workshop will also take place concurrently with Mario Abela who will be exploring the principles of film-making with a focus group made up of students who wish to be part of it.
In the third phase the script is completed, and this is where the audio-visual component of the project kicks in. Over a period of five school days, the footage needed will be filmed. Editing, production and finalising of the piece will be concluded.
