Project Title: Walls and Bridges – a printmaking project

This project explores intaglio printmaking which is seldom carried out in schools due to the skills needed and the expenses related to equipment. The school has just acquired an etching press, and this project will give a group of students the opportunity to learn the skills and techniques relevant in this field. This project is cross-curricular and it will impact many students studying various subjects ranging from History to Economics.

Project Title: Hrejjef Reali

Ħrejjef Reali will be a young person-led and devised project which culminates in a performance. Maltese folklore will be used as a starting point for discussion and artistic exploration, which will then allow the students to familiarize themselves both with Maltese folklore.. The participants will work with a drama and art therapist in the first phase of the project and will later separate into two groups depending on their interest. The drama group will devise a piece of theatre based on Maltese folklore and the visual arts group will create works of art which will be used as props during the performance. A musician will conduct a number of workshops with the theatre participants to accompany the performance with originally written songs. Cultural outings related to Maltese folklore will also be organised.

Project Title: Ċaqlaq Ċekċika

The project is a series of multidisciplinary workshops featuring dance and music as the main disciplines. The two disciplines will be bridged together by computational and digital arts. A choreographer will carry out dance workshops based on movements that can be useful in everyday life and encourage physical self-awareness and independence for the student. It is in the students’ interest that they are challenged physically in order to develop useful movements that they might not be comfortable performing but will prove useful in the future. These movements themselves, such as walking and gesturing, will be generating music through a range of sensors in the room, sensors on props and also wearable sensors. The music generated by the students will be accompanied by live ambient music which will add a degree of interaction and collaboration to the workshops.

Project Title: Our First Book of Stories – Book and Audiobook

Each grade 2 class will visit a historical building which will act as the source of inspiration for each story. Students will sit in a circle and compose the story, one sentence after another. The students will be visiting the Department of Digital Arts at the University of Malta and they will see their illustrations take on a different form as the University students show them how they work with images on their computers. Students will also experience working on their own images. A visit to the printing press will teach students about the process of printing a book. Musician Sarah Spiteri will give music workshops with each class and together they will use voice and percussions to compose a soundtrack to each story. Malcolm Galea will give acting workshops to teach the students how to read the story with emotion, good pronunciation and gusto. After the workshops, the stories and soundtracks will be recorded as an audiobook on a CD which will be included in each book.

Project Title: Science Simplified

This project introduces students to disciplines of Physical Theatre and Choreographed movement to enhance their repertoire of performance genres for IGCSE and future A level Drama/Theatre. The objective of this project is for students to collaborate with the Science department to create physical interpretations of scientific concepts in order to aid understanding. Students will also lead on the production of filmed performance resources which will be accessible to all students and wider public for teaching/learning/revision purposes. Students will also be exposed to filming skills, the basics of which have already been learnt during a previous Kreattiv project. Students will also perform live versions of chosen topics as part of IGCSE assessment and possibly, later for wider audience during Science Week in Valletta. Joint workshops for students, parents and teachers will be organised to in which professional film practitioners and experts in physical theatre will be asked to share their expertise. A visit to the University of Malta Media department will also take place so that students are exposed to further opportunities in this field.

Project Title: Aqta Fjura u Ibni Kamra

A group of students are going to interpret and represent “Aqta Fjura u Ibni Kamra”, a poem by local poet Immanuel Mifsud, through music, dance, drama and visual arts. In order to do so, students will meet up with several creative professionals who specialise in each of the areas through a number of workshops. The workshops will be aimed at discussing and understanding the poem, namely the different issues it addresses, and subsequently exploring such themes through the visual arts, music, drama and dance. The sessions held with the creative professionals are going to be documented on video to show the progress and development of ideas, as well as the creation of artworks, music and performance pieces. Finally a short artistic video clip will be put together amalgamating the arts and showing how these complement each other to communicate concepts, feelings and meaning.

Project Title: Augmented Reality Treasure Hunt

This project will give secondary students the right balance of theoretical and practical experience within the creatively compelling world of Augmented Reality, design and development. The technology will be introduced to pupils within the context of a treasure hunt. This addition will enhance and refresh the experience, making it more suited to contemporary times.
15 pupils from the school will be the creative force behind this project. Creating an AR Treasure Hunt using 10 points around the school, stringing together various fun historical facts and stories from the school’s past. Five of these points will be 2D animated and five other will be simple animated games. This process will be heavily collaborative and enterprising in nature for the pupils, bringing together and weaving various professional fields in creating a coherent whole.

This project aims at the creation of an Augmented Reality Game. This will be achieved through the engagement of 15 students in a series of theoretical and practical sessions, during which, they will be exposed to a variety of practical tasks such as Creative Research, Moodboards , Prototype Sketching , Sculpting, 3D Modelling , Texture Painting , Gaming, 2D Animation & Augmented Reality. Along the course of this project, individuals will be exposed to the flexible and interchangeable nature of physical and virtual artefacts. Students will be given an introduction to some of the various skills within the technological aspect of gaming as a creative industry. By bridging the gap between real world art and digital interactive experiences, this project will equip participants with a foundational skill set which can be applied within a variety of professions.

Project Title: A Silent Scream

This project deals with the issue of bullying. The school has its fair share of bullying cases which are dealt with by the Learning Support Zone manned by members of the school staff and situated on the school premises. Students attending the learning support Zone will have the opportunity to work on stories that mirror their experience of bullying. These stories will be acted out with a set of puppets created by another group of students during art classes. All the work will be brought together to culminate in a theatrical representation using puppetry for students around Malta and Gozo.

Project Title: Interactive Ceramics

Through different techniques in the art of ceramic-making such as coiling and slab building, students will be guided into making varying forms and surface patters. This will provide direct contact with pottery and the involvement of pottery tools such as rolling pins and cutting tools. Most of the new skills learnt are transferable to everyday life and this is the link which this project aims to reach.

Project Title: Textiles Artwork

In this project, students will be exposed to multiple artistic expressions utilising textiles as one of the mediums. The creative practitioner will give students hands-on experiences to express themselves creatively by painting on different textiles and fabrics. These mediums will vary from table cloths, napkins, aprons, decorative oven gloves, cushions and bags. Students will be guided to gain an innovative approach at decorating interior soft furnishings. A professional photo artist will also help the students to learn basic photography skills so that they can capture photos of their own artistic materials. Consequently, the students can innovatively amalgamate the fabric artistry products with digital artistry. Ultimately students will be in possession of tangible products which can be used to decorate their school/home environment as well as having the possibility to use these creative products in entrepreneurial skills.

Project Title: Student Short Film Project

Through this project the school will be introducing the art of film-making to its students. Since film-making is an intricate art form which brings together writing, acting, photography, music, as well as design and direction, this project will help students become more acquainted with these artistic areas. This project is also intended to strengthen a collaborative approach and teamwork among students.
In order to get the best results possible, students will be grouped according to their interests and partnered with the relevant industry professionals. Together with the help of teachers from the college, the creative practitioners will give workshops according to the art form and will explain the impact of each on the final product.
The short film will then feature in major film festivals in Malta such as Kinemastic and the Valletta Film Festival.

Project Title: Beyond the Visual Arts

Students will be exposed to the appreciation of the expression of arts that are non-visual. The school will be receiving students with visual impairments so it has been deemed an important process to encourage the school community to be aware and realise the potential that exists for artistic expression beyond the visual. We have teamed up with Fresh Music agency in view of providing participating students with the art of developing music and passing it to the public through Radio DJ practice. The partnership with the Youtheme Foundation will introduce students with young Maltese authors who will also share the process of creative writing. A small community Radio will then be setup by students from the school learning zone in view of providing the opportunity to project participants to share their writings, music and non-visual messages with the school community through the transmission of short radio programmes which will be aired during school breaks.

Project Title: Building and Assembling 3D Models

This project entails the creation and working of 3D models in the form of 3D cuttings worked from patterns and designs. Students will be involved in the creation and building of two aircrafts from waste material such as cardboard. The main focus of the program is the creation of a model of a traditional Maltese boat, ‘KAJJIKK’. This would be achieved with the help of a local craftsman using a trade which is on the verge of being forgotten. Our projected intention is to include modern technology and actually build a model to a size of about 2 meters. Both the two aircrafts and the model of the KAJJIKK will then be put on permanent display in our school foyer as an art installation.

Project Title: The Going Up Book

The aim of this project is to publish a book with three short novels. This project with the students of year 6 will focus on their feelings and thoughts of leaving primary school and going to middle school. Three short stories will be written in English and translated to Maltese, will be complimented with simple and effective illustrations. The project will be 100% student-driven and will follow the book-writing process from the initial storyline concept to visiting the print house to see the final published book come off the printing press.
Federico Chini (author and screen writer) will supervise the children’s story writing. Christabel Attard (Maltese language advisor) will help the students translate the stories into effective Maltese. Emma Morgan (artist) and Abi Macleod Clark (artist) will guide the children through creative illustrations complimenting the written words. Children will be choosing their favourite illustration techniques from: water colour, collage, character illustration, graphics, pen / ink and typography. The project will be closely monitored by the school PSCD teachers. Professionals will explain their experiences in their field. Pete Lally (a professional book binder) will explain about the art of book binding, while Marvic Spiteri (illustrator) will talk about the challenges and rewards of being a professional Illustrator.

Project Title: Stejjir.... ir-Ruh ta’ Gzira

In this project, Year 7 and Year 8 students have to choose an artefact representing a Gozo town or village and reproduce miniatures of these artefacts during their art lessons. Students are then grouped in thirteen smaller groups and set out on trails in different villages in Gozo. Each trail will lead that particular group to an artefact which is closely related to that particular village. Students from Year 10 and Year 11 will be engaged in painting a mural which portrays the different villages and the representative artefacts of each. All school students will be invited to work on this mural.

Project Title: Creative Alternate Learning Assessments

This project will take into account how a student’s sense of educational achievement might be disadvantaged because of one’s inability to express knowledge and understanding through a conventional written examination process. This project will take place with secondary school students preparing for their Maltese language ordinary level in the 4th year of their studies. Alternative representations of learning can take various forms. The aim of this project is to design a number of innovative alternative learning methods by integrating Creative Arts practice with ‘traditional’ classroom-based curricula. The intended outcome will be to help a learner to find a voice to communicate knowledge through the application of Creative Arts projects.
