Project Title: The stuff Superheroes are made of

Through the project Stuff Superheroes are Made Of students will investigate the theme of Materials, particularly materials with negative properties. The students will participate in workshops by scientist from the Malta Chamber of Scientist, at the University of Malta Metamaterial and Engineering labs students will meet Prof Joe Grima at the University of Mata who is currently researching materials which behave the opposite we expect them to. The students will then work in teams to write their own script, construct superhero costumes and design the stage with the help of More or Less Theatre and the Malta Chamber of Scientists. The final performance will be shared with primary students, parents and the local community and a STEAM theatre night held during Science in the City 2019 Festival.

Project Title: Let's Bee Creative

Bee Creative is a partnership project between St. Edward’s College, Golden Island Ltd. and Elisa Von Brockdorff. The departure point for this project are the existing apiaries at the College, with the aim being that of increasing the amount of apiaries and awareness, while adopting an interdisciplinary practice between subjects, providing a holistic approach to the theme. Through the project the students will be exposed to mold making, digital photography, poster and label design, painting and building an apiary using wood, wire netting and the introduction of four hives to the current bee colony. Students will also be designing and create a visually effective marketing campaign for beeswax products which they will sell at school, while photos documenting the project will be exhibited in May 2019. This project is also a tribute to Mr. Paul Harty, a Year 6 teacher and avid bee keeper who passed away in January 2018.

Project Title: Women Of Malta Empowering Nations

The students will interview a number of Maltese women from different walks of life to elicit from them what it takes to empower a woman to succeed in spite of all the odds. The women will be identified through a collaboration with BPW (Valletta). The students will then attend workshops with professional journalists, professionals in graphic Arts design, filming, photography and editing. The participating students will then conduct interviews with the chosen women, these interviews will be produced into an audio-visual production and a printed publication. Students from the PTI Achieve programme will attend a marketing workshop. These students will then work on the Entrepreneurship module, designing and producing the promotional material as well as organising the celebration event. Dissemination of the project will take place during the annual Career Day organised by BPW (Valletta) for female students.

Project Title: Is- Supereroj Isalvaw Is-Saltna tal-Bahar

The project aims to teach pupils the importance of safe guarding our natural habitats focusing mainly on the underwater world. Through this project the students will learn all about endangered species on and around the Maltese Islands guided by Prof Alan Deidun and Prof PJ Schembri from the University of Malta research team. During the visits the children will make sketches, take photographs and carry out a clean-up. Using these found objects the students will then produce a stop-motion animation short film. The students will also be introduced to the history of Greek vases depicting Greek myths. Then the students will make their own vases from clay and draw the story of the species they were investigating in scenes around their vases. The students will then start working a short stop motion film, under the guidance of a professional film maker, using the stories depicted on the vases as starting points. The students will be involved in the scripting, building of scenery and characters. The produced art works, sketches, vases and film will be showcased during an exhibition which will be held at school in May. The works will also to be exhibited at Science in the City 2019 at St James Cavalier as part of their program.

Project Title: The Voice inside the Teenage Mind

Through this project the students will be delving deeper into the notion of adolescent egocentrism and the related beliefs of the “imaginary audience” and “personal fable”. The artists together with the students will brainstorm some of the things teenagers go through and what affects them on a day to day basis. The children will be given the chance to explore the narrative of the performance with the artists and together develop the performance, from beginning to end using their daily experiences. This project aims to hold several workshop among the creatives, Dingli school teenage students, a programme developer from Esplora and the relevant Dingli school teachers to truly understand what goes on in the teenage mind. These workshops will be a safe environment where teenagers would be able to express how they feel, their troubles and the way they perceive the concept of 'self' in relation to others and society. The narratives emerging from these workshops will be translated to a performance together with the creative practitioners and performed at the school and Esplora.

Project Title: Muzajk

Muzajk is a creative endeavour with the objective of translating original Maltese poetry into painting and song. It is an opportunity for students with a verve for writing in Maltese, to be exposed to the works of some of the best authors on the island and under their guidance, create their own poetry. Once they have put their thoughts on paper, they have to explain their emotions to two other creative practitioners: a painter and a composer, who will be guiding two other groups of selected students. The latter have the task of recreating the mood of the poems in other media, thus moving from writing to painting and from writing to music and song. This project gives an opportunity to students to learn the skills of writing, painting, composing and singing, under the wing of well-known professionals. The project will culminate in a soiree during which the poems will come to life through songs performed on stage and accompanied live by the composer himself and represented by the paintings in an exhibition held on school premises. The general public will be invited.

Project Title: Inspired by Baroque Valletta

Valletta 2018 Capital of Culture is the basis and the inspiration for students to research, investigate and express their creativity with a new interpretation of Baroque. This is a cross-curricular activity combining History, Art, Music, Performing Arts. The students will be engaged in a number of talks and on-site visits to different areas of Valletta. Students will be encouraged to sketch details of architectural motifs in Valletta which will then be developed into different art pieces including graphic design printing, and art pieces produced by 3doodler pens. The students will work with professionals to make prints inspired by Valletta and create jewellery or any artefacts that reflects the intricacies and patterns left to us by the Baroque designers. Some students can use their designs to create prints on fabric, which will complement the jewellery designs. Moreover, students will collaborate with others following an entrepreneurship programme to promote their designed items. This will be tied in to the final show where students will also be given the opportunity to sell their items.

Project Title: ‘There was a Young Artist called Lear'..........

Although the overarching area of activity will be performance based, this project will encompass many aspects of the curriculum, including Environmental Studies, Literature, Film and Visual Arts as well as Dance. The project draws inspiration from a visit to farm cottages at Selmun, from where Edward Lear had painted, during his time in Malta. Different classes will be involvedin different activities which will all be lead to the final performance. A group of students will visit the Selmun farms and create a video about daily life in former times. Another group will create a 'documentary' style video about Rural Architecture whereas another group will then be involved in fascinating puppetry workshop which will lead to enhanced story telling technique based on the characters of Lear’s nonsense poems. These students will also present the poems as Choral Speaking to accompany the puppets which they will make. Limericks are a fun aspect of English Literature and students will be encouraged to write their own poems in the style of Edward Lear. Another group of students will visit the Museum of Childhood on Gozo, which includes references to Edward Lear. The students will be involved hands-on in the making and editing of the video, writting of peotry and puppets.

Through this project the students will be led into an endeavour about the school ethos. The process of redefining the school’s mission statement to better reflect the new reality of the school started a couple of years ago, the ethos that came out of a creative process of rediscovery is intended to be an unfinished work, a perpetual draft permeable to the world, as we seek to make sense out of it and to transform it. Through this project the school will produce a video clip which will serve as a tool of dissemination for the new ethos, this will be produced by the students together with creatives, the school community and the community at large.

Project Title: Maths and Physics are fun

This project involves the main subjects physics and maths and the explanation of various themes in the syllabus through innovative and creative ways. The school will organise a day filled with fun activities involving physics and maths. In preparation for the day, the students will meet the creative artists and will design ways how to explain Newton's Laws and Momentum, Hooke's Law, Moments and gravity through dance movements. We will also involve the students to design and build creative objects using recycled materials to show the stability of objects when it comes to the centre of gravity of the objects. The mathematical aspect will focus on workshops open to other schools where students are encouraged to solve mathematical problems through hand on experience. Some of the events taking place in class will be filmed and a short video will be showcased during the performance.

Project Title: Learning to Live Life in Full Bloom

The project takes a multi-disciplinary approach of various creative arts, in order to help students learn how to better manage and express their emotions. This project will take a cross-curricular approach to teaching about the growth, environmental and the metaphorical significance of trees, through the 34U campaign, where each student will plant an indigenous tree on our island. With the aid of various teachers at the and experts in different areas, the students will create a wooden reproduction of a tree on one of our school walls, and from the branches of the tree, different flowers made by the students using filigree and ganutell techniques will bloom, signifying every individual student that passes through the Centre. Movement classes, art therapy and music will be used as tools for verbal and non-verbal communication. Finally, the students, with the help of all the professionals involved, will be able to create and involve themselves in a final performance of a song which we envisage to be based on meaningful quotes representing their life experiences. These inspirational quotes will also be affixed on the tree mural.

Project Title: Our Town

Our Town is a nine-week multi-disciplinary child led art project exploring what our town means to Year 1 pupils. Throughout the project the students together with the creative practictioners will embark on an endeavour to discover what makes a town work, what makes us happy about our town and what makes us sad. The students will discover historic buildings, green spaces and local people that make up the town they are living in. Through art, architecture, history and environmental studies we will design and build our very own town out of recycled materials. The project will then be documented in a short mini film as a lasting legacy to the project.

Project Title: Celebrating our abilities

This project will provide the possibility to young adults attending the centre to follow dance and percussion sessions organised by Opening Doors Association, dance practitioner Mr Douglas Comley and percussionist Mr Luke Baldacchino. The project will involve around 40 students in the above mentioned disciplines in weekly sessions with the aim of improving the students co-ordination, strength, flexibility, musicality and performance skills through this training. Sessions will also be geared towards stimulating the participants' own/individual expression through movement. This will be done via improvisational movement tasks and further stimulation through music organised by Ms Sara Spiteri. The project will culminate to a performance event held in May 2019. In this way the participants will have the opportunity to demonstrate the skills learnt formally to the public.

Project Title: NIMXU MIXJA Walking as an art practice and beyond

Through a number of walks, the Year 5 students from St Theresa College, Birkirkara Primary school, in collaboration with their educators and creative practitioners Kristina Borg and Raffaella Zammit, will explore and interact with the environment in the vicinity of their school. Exploring different notions and styles of walking, and trying out different methods of mapping such walks, the students will understand better how the experience of space results in a multisensory experience affecting one’s well-being. By analysing the present without forgetting the past, the students will reflect on Birkirkara’s changing landscape in relation to its memory, geography, architecture, heritage as well as its hidden and neglected spaces. This onsite walking will be developed and processed further through drawing, creative writing, mathematical and social studies lessons. The project will culminate in a final community walk open for all students, parents and the Birkirkara community - this community walk will end with an exhibition launch at the The Mill - Art, Culture and Crafts Centre, run by the Gabriel Caruana Foundation, where all the process work will be on display.

Project Title: Malta’s Building Bricks

Malta has many iconic buildings that may go unnoticed. The project will start with site visits to places such as Mosta Dome, Hagar Qim and the Parliament building where, assisted by staff, students will take photos of the buildings with the aim of later creating them in ceramic form. The photos will be printed, mostly for reference but also to be used as part of the project work. Further studies will be done from photographs appearing in books and documentaries with note taken as to why these buildings are iconic. Taking into consideration the students' limited ability to work free-hand with clay, they will then be guided through the process of making templates in cardboard of the buildings they have chosen to reproduce. Slabs with multiple layers will be used as the main technique for creating the ceramic pieces. Cardboard templates will enable the students to cut the clay accurately and add modelled features. The resulting 3D models and relief clay objects will then be exhibited around the school together with the research photos.

Through this project, students will reinterpret Maltese music into visual artform. Through two music concerts which will be held at the school the students will be exposed to two styles of music; contemporary and folk. The musicans engaged in the process are the Travellers and a local Gozitan folk band. Following the concert the students will then meet with the artist and give him their interpretation of their auditory experience. The interpretation of the folk music will be solely based on the melody since it is lyric-less, whereas the interpretation of the songs by The Travellers will be based on all three aspects of music: rhythm, melody and lyrics. Through the guidance of the visual artist the students will produce visual representation of the music through paintings which will be published in a book and permanently exhibited on a wall within the school.

Project Title: IĊ-Ċittadella: Ilwien ta' Belt Qadima

The project presents a multidisciplinary approach towards the production of an educational feature about the Citadel by Year 5 students. The project links Media Literacy with Mathematics, Creative Arts, Music and Drama. This educational feature will give students the possibility to experience blended learning by working behind the scenes and also being part of this educational experience in front of the camera. The feature will include 215 Year 5 students through different approaches, presenting this project as an inclusive interactive approach towards integrated learning. Teachers from Heritage Malta will empower students with knowledge about the cultural and heritage value of the Citadel, focusing on strategic landmarks from the area to be included in this educational feature through a number of interactive workshops. Mr Mark Laurence Zammit will give students a hands-on approach on how to select information and develop a good script which communicates a message effectively to the largest possible audience on television and social media.
