Project title: Translation into Romanian of "Kulħadd Ħalla Isem Warajh" by Clare Azzopardi

A translation into Romanian by poet and translator Denisa Duran of Clare Azzopardi's collection of short stories entitiled Kulħadd Ħalla Isem Warajh (The names they left behind) (Merlin Publishers). The book has won the National Book Prize in 2014, in the category for Best Short Story in Maltese and English. It is a book written by a woman celebrating women. When translations are ready, Denisa will forward them to her publisher, the same publisher that has already published Immanuel Mifsud in Romanian a couple of years ago. The publisher will then pay an editor and a proofreader and also all the printing costs.

Project title: Translation into English of Joe Friggieri "Nismagħhom Jgħidu"

A translation into English by Clare Vassallo of Joe Frggieri's book, Nismagħhom Jgħidu (Kite, 2016). This work is Friggieri's most recent collection of Short Stories capturing the lives of Maltese people against a backdrop of Malta that is rapidly changing and shifting. For this reason, many seem imbued with a sense of nostalgia not yet made explicit. As the title Nismagħhom Jgħidu suggests, this collection provides glimpses and echoes of other people's lives happening around us. The intention is to have these works disseminated and distributed in Australia.

Project title: Translation into Spanish of "FREJP", by Clare Azzopardi

Translation into Spanish by Maria Raimondo Meilan of FREJP by Clare Azzopardi, using the bridge translation into English by Albert Gatt. Clare Azzopardi's novel FREJP is an important book that tackles contemporary concerns with how we live and interact in the world, with one another and with and within the online environment which is today such an integral part of our lives, especially for our youth. Flores Raras, the publishing house entrusted with the project has been very successful in getting a lot of attention for its initial titles, which have championed women writers whose voices have often been overlooked or marginalized. Flores Raras will also be exhibiting at the Guadalajara International Book Fair in 2017, and its books are distributed throughout Latin America, especially in Argentina and Mexico.

Project title: Romarin et autres caprices - Reading Maltese Poetry in Paris

A translation into French of Adrian Grima's collection of poems, Klin u Kapriċċi Oħra (Klabb Kotba Maltin 2015), by the Paris-based literary translator, Elizabeth Grech. This collection was shortlisted for the National Book Prize in 2016 in the category for Best Poetry in Maltese and English. The poems in Klin u Kapriċċi Oħra deal with themes that are universal (like love and death), local (like the passion for Maltese food) and regional (the Mediterranean) and "current" affairs (like forced migration and conflict). The author plans to disseminate and promote the poetry translated into French by giving two readings at culturally significant venues in Paris, iReMMO and Inalco, in February and March 2018. The author also plans to add French subtitles to videos of readings from Klin u Kapriċċi Oħra and a poetic manifesto, "Għalija l-Poeżija," which was filmed and is also available on his channel on Youtube.

Project title: Translation of the novel "Gramma" by Leanne Ellul into English

A translation into English by Albert Gatt of the award winning novel Gramma by Leanne Ellul, which won the Novel for Youth Prize in 2015. The book mainly deals with anorexia and it narrates the journey of a teenager as she loses weight dramatically, but is in denial about it and keeps obsessing over her weight, even as those around try to make her aware that she's becoming sickly thin. Leanne Ellul will be reading from the translated novel during the following events: The Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, the Globale Literature Festival, a unique platform in Europe that fosters dialogue between cultures and literatures, at the Librebook in Brussels and at the Malta Mediterranean Literature Festival. With the English translation in hand, which can act as a bridge language, publication of the novel in English will follow in due time.

Project title: Translation into Albanian of "The Maltese Baron ... I Lucian", by Francis Ebejer.

A translation into Albanian by Elisa Ivanaj of the book The Maltese Baron... I Lucian, by Francis Ebejer. The book in Albanian will be published by OMBRA GVG based in Tirana, Albania. The Maltese Baron ... I Lucian is a posthumous novel that can be considered a twin of A Requiem for a Malta Fascist (1980) with which it shares several similarities in terms of theme and style. This novel treats fascism and the Second World War. The war dominated Ebejer like a psychological fact that was an extraordinary experience of intractable material which affected human associations. Also, the novel deals with the themes of friendship and love in a network of relationships. The publisher and the translator will aid promotion by giving interviews and discussions about the book. The translator will also be present in newspapers, magazines and in radio shows. An important element in the promotion of the translated book will be its presentation and its sale at the 2018 Tirana Book Fair, as well as at the 2018 Prishtina Book Fair (Kosovo), at the Skopje Book Fair (FYROM) and at the Ulcinj Book Fair (Montenegro).

A translation into English by Rose Marie Caruana of L-Appartament fir-Raba' Sular by Charles Casha. The book presents an intense and compelling story which evolves round the theme of decision making and their outcome and responsibilities as well as the concepts of time, love, inner conflict, and the complexities of human inter-relations. A UK-based literary agent has already shown interest in this book and furthermore, there is a good possibility that this translation will be used as a bridge-language for the book to be translated into Turkish through the same agent.

Ksiazkowe Klimaty publishing house in Poland will be managing the translation into Polish of Pierre Mejlak's collection of stories Dak li l-Lejl Iħallik Tgħid, originally published in June 2011 by Merlin Publishers Ltd. Pierre Mejlak has been awarded National Book Awards from Malta several times, the Commonwealth Essay Writing Award and the 2014 European Union Prize for Literature. One of the short stories included in the collection which will be translated into Polish, Nixtieq Ngħajjat lil Samirah ('I Want to Call Out to Samirah') also won the Sea of Words European Short Story Award.

Project title: Translating the novel 'Jutta Heim' by Immanuel Mifsud into Serbian using English as a bridge language

Milan Dobricic will be translating into Serbian the award winning novel entitled Jutta Heim written by Immanuel Mifsud, originally published in 2014 by Midsea Books Ltd. Immanuel has been awarded the Malta National Book Awards several times and in 2011 he became the first Maltese writer to win the European Union Prize for Literature. The novel Jutta Heim poetically recounts the story of a local actor Erik Xerri, who falls hopelessly in love with a woman, after spending just one night with her in a then-devided Berlin. The story connects global and local events through space and time. Dejan Matic, director and editor-in-chief of Treci Trg will be publishing this novel with the aim of presenting the work of modern Maltese authors to the reading public in Serbia, and also in the Balkans.

Project title: The Manduca Case, (Irvin Vella, Virtual Investigator, #01)

This project invloves the translation into Spanish of John A. Bonelo's book for children The Manduca Case, originally published in 2015 by Merlin Publishers. The novel was awarded 1st Prize in the National Book Award, Premju Terramaxka in 2016 in the category Books for Children 8-12 years. The story follows three young protagonsists trying to unravel a haunted house mystery. The setting is contemporary Malta where we see a young detective and his twin cousins travel between locations in search of clues. Based on the huge local success, The Manduca Case should also appeal to a broad international readership. The translation to Spanish will be carried out by Dr. Maria Gene' Gil on behalf of "Idiomatic", a translations agency based in Spain.

Project title: Translation of 'Fejn Għexna', a creative documentary featuring Maltese cultural lifestyle according to different towns and villages

Translation of Fejn Għexna, a set of five creative documentaries featuring the lifestyle of different towns and villages in Malta. The work which will be translated is currently airing on local television stations. The documentaries are about 26 minutes long and feature different personalities and characters living in a particular town or village, storytelling the most popular events, both positive and tragic, that happened in their respective town or village throughout the years. They also tell their childhood memories intertwined with old footage. The idea is to promote the history of the town or village through people's point of view. Having the documentary translated into English would facilitate a wider international distribution of the content. The plan is to further distribute the translated work on the available social media platforms which are today a very influential medium and a powerful mass media tool.
