Project Title: Għaddi: an experiential walkthrough Kalkara
Amount awarded: € 5,000
Għaddi is a joint project of Assoċjazzjoni Wirt il-Kalkara, Esplora Interactive Science Centre, and community artist Kristina Borg, with the collaboration of the Kalkara Parish youth group and the endorsement of the Kalkara Local Council. The project celebrates Kalkara’s socio-cultural identity, history and collective memory, exploring and discovering what the locality and its people have to offer. The walk departs from Esplora and takes the walkers through the streets of Kalkara, with a focus on the village core. While following a given route, the walkers can listen to a narrative - written and interpreted by the participant community members - that will in turn invite them to make a number of stops. At these stops, walkers can interact with a number of makers and facilitators who will provide the walkers with the tools necessary for a corresponding hands-on experiment reflecting the host’s skill. The walk will mainly address families – engaging at least three generations: children, parents/guardians and grandparents – as the project’s primary target audience.

Project Title: BandGħana -A community-driven exercise aimed at creating a new found collaboration between two musical genres: a local Maltese Band and Traditional Folk Music (Għana).
Amount awarded: € 5,000
BandGħana is a community-driven project aimed at creating a new found collaboration between a local Maltese Band and Għana. A close look at għana, will reveal that it tends to tell stories about life in the village or some important event. The idea behind the BandGħana symbiosis is therefore to revive Ħal Balzan’s community’s history, local events and happenings which identify and give life to the community (research element), through the involvement of members of the locality contributing (through the workshops) towards the lyrics and stories being sung. In addition, the exercise will also involve a band playing with the għannejja, who are usually only accompanied by guitars. This will result in the transposition of traditional folk music into band music, thus creating a new marriage. Through the injection of the local element in this exercise, the project seeks to give a sense of belonging to the community and new repertoire for the benefit of future generations. The result (event) of this process will be showcased at the final stage of the project through a concert, open to the general public free of charge.

Apart from this, it will also improve their teamwork, integration and coping skills.
