Project Title: Birżebbuġa Riposto

A music programme in Riposto, Sicily – a comune with close affinity to Birżebbuġa. The bands of the two localities will finalise a twinning agreement between themselves, in the run up of a twinning agreement between the two localities themsleves. The two bands will be playing in the main streets of the comune, leading up to a concert in the main square where the bands will be playing compositions from the respective countries.

Project Title: Concert showcasing music by the two great composers

A project celebrating the 120th anniversary from when Mro Carlo Diacono became the Director of the Beland Band, and the 15th anniversary of Mro Ray Sciberras as director of the same band. The concert will include the premiere of a new composition by Mro Ray Sciberras. The concert will also serve to revive historical music pieces from the archives of Beland Band Club, with the restoration, arrangement and performance of music by the legendary Mro Carlo Diacono. To accompany the concert, the Band will be organising a symposium about Mro Carlo Diacono and an exhibition showcasing various original music scores written by him which make an important part of the Band’s archives. Engagement with schools in the Żejtun area will include the organisation of a music workshop – where the students will be given the opportunity to try out the various instruments that make up a wind band.

Project Title: Il-Kotra Qamet... u Lissnet Nisġa Mużikali

A music festival celebrating the identity of the village of Żebbuġ and promoting awareness of its traditions. The project will focus on popular traditional and folkloristic Maltese songs, with a view to cultivating and promoting local culture. The project involves theartistic development of local bandsman, and seeks to help the public foster tradition and culture – through engagement and active participation.

Project Title: Rakkont Ħaj

Kummissjoni Web will interview people within the community of Mqabba, both on an individual and collective basis, to document their memories via video sharing and presented online through a facebook page. Particular emphasis will be given to what the locality is mostly renowned for, its stone, quarry works and organisation of community festas, in the hope of strengthening and increasing awareness of our tangible and intangible local heritage.

Project Title: Vanishing Trades

“A community with no narrative to tell doesn’t survive as a community”. When you think about that for a second, you realise that stories can define us as individuals, and as members of a family, a community and a country. As individuals we each have a story to tell – forged from our rich reservoir of Maltese history, unique life choices and experiences. The project will collect narratives of local vanishing trades and of the people that used to do them. The documented narratives will be incorporated into a series of multi-media events for the general public.

Project Title: GNLM - Understanding Comics and Drawing Comics Workshops 2017

This project aims to teach reading through art and storytelling. The workshop ‘Understanding Comics’ wil be centred around the book Understanding Comics by Scout McCloud and will be specifically designed to give participants a broad understanding of the medium of comics. The workshop ‘Drawing Comics’ will be delivered by a local comic book creator and will focus on teaching the necessary skills to create and draw comics. The attendees will be requested to draw 2 pages or more of a library guide in comic book format which will be used for instructional purposes at the Public Library. GNLM also intends to commission the creation of an original story in comic book format that makes reference to characters from classic Maltese literature and folklore in a new setting. Through this project, GNLM aims to create an active audience at the Public Library, as well as promote literacy and help participants develop an appreciation for different art styles and cultures.

Project Title: Classical, Sacred and Epic: An Exploration of Diversity through Music

This is a project that will involve the local community in a journey of exploration of diversity through various kinds of music. It will provide the band club’s musicians with the opportunity to work in close collaboration with professional musicians, soloists, choral singers and string instrument performers. The band club, Coro Bel Canto under the musical direction of Hermann Farrugia Frantz and soloists Connie Frances Zerafa and Claire Caruana will be performing during a concert which will be held at Luqa’s Parish Church on 1st April 2017. A series of sectional rehearsals and masterclasses will be conducted in order to enhance the musical skills of the musicians. The project will also include a seminar at the Society’s premises and an interactive activity at Luqa’s Primary School

Project Title: InterESTing Youth @ CCF – The National Art Museum’s Holistic Educational Purposes in the 21st Century: Interactive Educational Strategies targeting Youth at the Corradino Correctional Facilities

This project will be carried out within the context of the current scenario of the National Museum of Fine Arts (NMFA), now in transition to MUŻA. The project’s workshops will involve hands-on activities, including concepts of mind-mapping, self-evaluation and journaling which can be applied throughout the participants’ present and future life. The youths will construct their own knowledge through a creative process of art-making, while thinking critically and creatively, evaluating, collaborating, and discussing their own needs in relation to the themes they choose to develop in any chosen material, with reference to their own selection of works from the NMFA collection. The project will also feature a public exhibition of sketches, journals, finished and still-in-progress works. Through this project, KOPIN intends to continue engaging in the arts in its mission to innovatively and creatively advocate for social justice and the inclusion of marginalised communities.

Project Title: WASLET IL-BANDA... 20 sena vjaġġ

The Philharmonic Society will be organising a music-cultural collage commemorating the 20th anniversary of the band club’s official inauguration and the new archive of the same band club. This project will feature a symposium focusing on the band club’s history and its impact on the community. The Society will be setting up a permanent exhibition including photographic stands as well as a music concert which will include the premiere of a new composition by music director Mro Joseph Grech. During the concert, a series of historical music pieces from the archives of the band club will also be performed. The project’s main aim is to provide the community with a unique inspirational experience which helps foster a sense of pride within its members whilst engaging them further.

Project Title: Kreaturi

This project focuses on creativity, community and artistic legacy. 20 children aged between 10 and 13 and residing in Birkirkara and Balzan will be provided with a space to unleash their creative potential. The participants will be presented with an overview of modern art in Malta, the main modern artists and Gabriel Caruana’s artistic legacy, with a focus on his biomorphic figures. There will also be a total of 8 workshops and the setting up of an exhibition of the participants’ creations. Emerging ceramic artist Andrea Pullicino and art teacher Joyce Camilleri will be collaborating in this project. The Foundation firmly believes that this project will further cultivate the link between Gabriel Caruana’s legacy as an artist, teacher and creative and the Birkirkara and Balzan communities.

Project Title: Our Island: personal accounts of protecting refugees in Malta

In the Foundation’s views, whilst much is said about refugees in Malta, little is documented in terms of the early years of these arrivals and how, throughout the decades, these arrrivals shaped various parts of Maltese communities. The project will therefore invite directly involved individuals to write about their experiences, thoughts and significant moments. The main aim is to document important years in Malta’s social and community history by gathering informal and personal accounts from those persons who experienced it first hand. The project’s collaborators will include those persons working with front-line organisations, Government officials, refugees, media entities, international entities and EU entities. Two Memory Sessions will be organised in order to stimulate memories, and a publication written in a personal and informal manner will be made publicly available in bookstores and disseminated through academic and organisation networks. The Foundation believes that the memory process itself will heal past wounds and show us the paths we lived, in the hope that these will help us reshape our current and future paths, whilst being more effective in our current and future efforts at protecting refugees.

Project Title: One in a Million

This is a collaborative drama and art project aimed at children of different ages, abilities, ethnicities, socio-economic backgrounds and religions. The Foundation intends to invite approximately 500 children aged between 5 and 11 who attend Maltese and international schools, refugee centres and organisations that support children with mixed abilities. A series of workshops will help the participants explore the beauty in diversity as well as what makes each child unique and beautiful, using fish as a metaphor. The children will be required to paint their own fish which they will place in the shoals of brightly coloured fish. The artwork prepared by the children will be integrated in the ‘Art of Peace Exhibition’ to be held at Spazju Kreattiv in March 2017 and showcased alongside impactful conflict art from around the world that has been selected by an international jury. The artwork will finally be moved to the Ministry of Education. The British Council and a multidisciplinary team of local and foreign artists, drama therapists and photographers will be collaborating in this project.

Project Title: Theatre: The Fiction Machine

This project revolves around educating the younger community in appreciating more Teatru Salesjan (TS) by means of an interactive game. The theatre will be inviting 7 schools in Sliema to bring a minimum of one class to a 2-hour experience at the theatre. The participants will be given a tour of the theatre and requested to collect information about its history. The gathered information will be used to create drawings which will be scanned to create one big digital masterpiece. This communal piece will eventually be exhibited and distributed during the Sliema Arts Festival and at the respective schools. Teatru Salesjan aims to help eliminate the idea that theatre exists only for entertainment, as well as to reach out to new communities through the arts.

Project Title: Għidli Storja

This project aims to create spaces for the elderly to share stories and memories. There will also be the production of a series of short animated episodes based on personal stories narrated by the elderly to celebrate their experiences. The bygone socio-environmental interactions and landscapes will be documented and publicly showcased to encourage critical reflection of current socio-ecological issues. A team of local environmental activists and creatives will get together and visit rest homes to engage with the elderly community. The final footage will be integrated into twelve, 5-minute episodes which will be made available on social media platforms. Through this project, Greenhouse Malta aims to become more active in projects that have socio-ecological value and experiment with different methodologies to raise awareness on environmental issues by stimulating creative thinking in innovative ways.

Project Title: An Introduction to Music Production

‘Gramophone Studios’ is a recording studio/live rehearsal space found within the Salesian Oratory community. Its aim is to provide a space for young people to express themselves through music, and to create educational opportunities in areas such as recording and mixing music. Thus, this project involves a series of workshops for youths which will be conducted by 2 professionally experienced recording engineers/producers. Open to the local community and beyond, the workshops will focus on music production and will enable its participants to achieve a better understanding in the field. The whole process will involve a hands-on approach on how a track is made from start to finish. Participants will also be encouraged to give their suggestions with regards to the production of a given song as in a real live studio situation.

Project Title: La Semana Santa at Mqabba

The project consists of a series of activities in ocassion of Holy Week. During ‘La Semana Santa’ at Mqabba, Spanish and Maltese traditions are entwined and various local works of art are exposed to the public. The garments of the statues brought over from Naples are the creations of the volunteers who used ganutell and painted on drapes threaded in gold and filigree. The project will also feature a concert by the band members during which traditional Maltese Funeral Marches will be accompanied by Flamenco Dancers from Alegria Malta Academy and animated by the band club’s drama group. The whole experience will contribute to the community’s legacy and will give the band club more visibility within the local community. The final product will be documented through a variety of photos and videos.
