Maria Regina College
The project used the socially ubiquitous music of rap to inspire students from Maria Regina College to understand themselves, the world around them whilst being given the tools to express their feelings.
Jon Mallia, a popular rapper, taught participants the importance of listening and consuming information with a critical mind. This skill translates to many life scenarios. Furthermore, students were asked to talk openly about themes such as violence, racism, relationships and wealth in a comfortable setting, using rap music as their vehicle. The project broadened the participants’ vocabulary and understanding of linguistic tools such as figurative speech and parts of speech whilst inspiring each student to be an individual, contributing to a collective cause. Two songs were eventually composed by the students, with lyrics depicting a drug addiction scenario whilst the second one focused on domestic violence.
