Earlier this year, Arts Council Malta in New York presented a Book Reading event featuring Oliver Friggieri’s book The Misfit (translated by Charles Briffa; published by Faraxa Publishing) at the European Literature Night (ELN).
This was one of 14 reading events held all across different venues at the Bohemian National Hall on June 2nd in New York City. Selected readings from The Misfit were read by a New York City actor and in between each reading, Professor John Baldacchino (Director of the Arts Institute at the University of Wisconsin in Madison) presented a detailed commentary in the form of a critical historical analysis of Friggieri’s work.
Friggieri’s work is considered pivotal in the development of the Maltese language. The Misfit, originally published as L-Istramb (1980), is one of Friggieri’s finest works, capturing the complexity of Maltese society, teasing out the dynamic relationships of what it is to be Maltese, defined, as it were, by what it is not. This book’s English translation by Charles Briffa, a fellow professor, and a prominent literary author, confirms Briffa‘s intimate knowledge of Friggieri’s work.
