EUNIC ANKARA
In September 2024 Maltese musician Alexia Micallef participated in the EUNIC “Sound of Europe Festival”. The third edition of the Sound of Europe Festival was held in Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir, and it was brought to life through the initiative of the Istanbul and Ankara clusters of EUNIC, together with the participation of the Municipalities of Çankaya, Kadıköy and Izmir. The aim of the festival was to bring together new European voices and artists who are at the start of their career, and who have started to make their names heard across different geographies.
This year, the programme featured over 25 concerts, with musical groups hailing from 13 European countries as well as some local Turkish bands. All concerts were free and open to the public, and attracted crowds of all ages. This year’s festival focused predominantly on female artists, and the Maltese musician Alexia Micallef, accompanied by guitarist Robert Muscat, represented Malta. Their participation was also made possible by Arts Council Malta in collaboration with the Malta Embassy in Ankara.
Third Edition of Sound of Europe: Two days, three cities, more than 25 concerts
The third edition of the Sound of Europe Festival was held between the 14th and 15th September 2024 in Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir. The Sound of Europe Festival was brought to life through the initiative of the Istanbul and Ankara clusters of EUNIC (European Union National Institutes of Culture), together with the participation of the Municipalities of Çankaya, Kadıköy and Izmir. The aim of the festival is to bring together new European voices and artists who are at the start of their career, and who have started to make their names heard across different geographies.
This year, the programme featured over 25 concerts, with musical groups hailing from 13 European countries as well as some local Turkish bands. All concerts were free and open to the public, and attracted crowds of all ages. This year’s festival focused predominantly on female artists, and the talented Maltese artist Alexia Micallef, accompanied by guitarist Robert Muscat, represented Malta, thanks to Arts Council Malta.
The duo’s set list varied from Bob Marley covers to a distinct interpretation of Bohemian Rhapsody to an original song in Maltese. Alexia Micallef’s versatile voice and confidence, and Robert Muscat’s passion for music were very well received by the crowd who sang along to the well-known tunes. The duo’s energy and artistic skill resonated positively with the audience, which created a very lively and engaging atmosphere.
This event was supported by Arts Council Malta.
