Visual artist Kristina Borg and design architect Elyse Tonna were selected as the first two Maltese cultural innovators participating in the Salzburg Global Forum for Young Cultural Innovators. They presented their vision for the programme during a meeting with Minister for Justice, Culture and Local Government Owen Bonnici and U.S Ambassador G. Kathleen Hill. The Maltese participation in the Forum is being secured through a three-year partnership agreement between the Council’s Strategy Directorate and the Salzburg Global Forum, in collaboration with the U.S Embassy in Malta.
The Young Cultural Innovators will join the Forum with fifty of the world's most dynamic young creative changemakers. They will also network with “YCI hubs” in six regions of the world to help them develop the dynamic vision, entrepreneurial skills, and global networks needed to advance their organizations, their causes, and their communities.
During this meeting Minister Bonnici expressed his satisfaction towards this cooperation since it will offer an opportunity to the youths in a relatively new artistic niche. In fact, this agreement is resulting in an opportunity for youth innovators in the artistic and cultural sectors, with the aim to use art as a tool to face challenges of the 21st century, such as contributing to sustainable development.
Minister Bonnici said how this is an example that culture cannot be seen in isolation, but is a sector which intertwines with other important areas in our society such as sustainable and economic development.
U.S. Ambassador G. Kathleen Hill congratulated the participants in the Young Cultural Innovators Seminar and reiterated the U.S. government’s commitment to advancing cultural exchange and fostering innovation through such collaborative programmes.
In his conclusion, Minister Bonnici congratulated the two artists and welcomed the partnership reflecting the priorities set by Arts Council Malta to secure more opportunities to advance cultural innovation and leadership in Malta.
