J.A.R.M. (Just Another Recon Mission) by Mighty Box is the winner of the Malta Digital Games Fund final competition, Arts Council Malta has announced

The announcement was made during the Malta International Game Jam organised by the Institute of Digital Games at the University of Malta last weekend.

J.A.R.M. (Just Another Recon Mission) is a 2D puzzle platformer set in an unexplored alien landscape. The protagonist is carrying out a recon mission for a multi-galactic resource gathering company on a newly discovered planet; another regular 'day at the office' for her.  During the course of the mission she discovers an item that will eventually allow her to cross to another dimension which is reminiscent of a theatre's backstage, albeit a sophisticated one. In this alternative dimension, she finds that she can change the behaviour of objects in her ‘normal’ world. The player will have to cross between the two dimensions to solve puzzles and progress to further levels.

The winning game, selected by a jury of international judges, will be awarded €35,000 to complete the game during the second phase of the programme.

The Malta Digital Games Fund (MDGF) was designed to provide budding game developers and designers and ancillary service providers with the opportunity to have access to expertise and mentoring to help improve their artistic and technical skills. The fund forms part of Arts Council Malta’s professionalisation funding portfolio.

Three games were shortlisted from the 16 applications received and were awarded €10,000 each to develop a playable demo which was pitched during the Malta International GameJam.

For this call, Arts Council Malta worked in collaboration with the Institute of Digital Games at University of Malta in order to provide the beneficiaries with expertise to help them hone their technical skills.. Additionally through collaboration with TAKEOFF Business Incubator, the beneficiaries also received mentoring on business and entrepreneurial skills that are required for the product to reach the market.

Applications for the next call of the Malta Digital Games Fund open on the 15th March 2017. For further information visit here.
