Through this initiative, Alexandra Camilleri Gambin will participate in an eight-day workshop in Helsinki leading to a performance at the Europa Cantat Festival in Tallinn under the direction of Maria van Nieukerken and Mikko Sidoroff.
Earlier this year, auditions for the World Youth Choir and EuroChoir 2018 were held at Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta in collaboration with Arts Council Malta and the European Choral Association, represented by and on the initiative of Dr Joseph Lia.
This project aims to promote European choral music among young singers and to encourage cultural exchange within Europe. Participants in these choirs are selected by artistic merit. No Maltese representative was selected for the World Youth Choir.
Alexandra Camilleri Gambin is a piano and music teacher, accompanist and vocalist. She is currently reading for a BA Hons degree in Music at the University of Malta. Alexandra’s choral endeavours started when she joined the Malta Children’s Choir at just eight years old and, throughout the years, she has taken part in several concerts, musicals and festivals, including The Beatles Philharmonic Tribute at the Royal Albert Hall in London. In 2001, Alexandra joined the St Monica Choir under the direction of Sr Baniamina Portelli; of which she is still a member. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, Carmina Burana, and Porgy and Bess are just a few of the productions she took part in with St Monica Choir. She has also travelled to Madrid and Scotland with the same choir.
Upon graduating from University with a marketing degree in 2012, Alexandra travelled to Liverpool, where she studied performing arts at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA). She graduated with a Distinction in a Foundation Certificate and during her time at LIPA she developed her singing through several choir events and by joining several bands as a backing vocalist. She has also recorded the choir part with the LIPA Gospel Choir for the single He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother, Hillsborough’s Charity Single, which became UK’s Christmas number one on 23 December 2012.
