Addressing a press conference for the launch of EUNIC Malta, Mr Albert Marshall, Executive Chair of Arts Council Malta, stated that apart from export, ‘another seminal element of how Council conceives Internationalisation also includes network-building and clustering. A network such as EUNIC is a prime platform for the execution of our work in this area.
‘Having a EUNIC Malta cluster has always been an ambition of mine and I am thrilled that this is now becoming reality. Arts Council Malta is delighted, honoured and proud to be part of this collaboration and we are looking forward to witnessing the fruits of the EUNIC Malta cluster.’
Ambassador of Austria Andreas Stadler and Dr Massimo Sarti, the Malta cluster’s co-Presidents, together with Ms Ingrid Eomois, the cluster’s vice-President, also addressed the group, which included several European Ambassadors and directors of Cultural Institutes based in Malta. Hon. Minister Jose Herrera together with Hon. Minister Evarist Bartolo delivered the final two speeches.
EUNIC, the European Union National Institutes for Culture, is the European network of organisations engaging in international cultural relations. EUNIC members join together in 132 clusters in 102 countries worldwide. Clusters are the network's branches, engaging in cultural relations, co-creating activities with partner organisations.
The EUNIC Malta Cluster envisages to facilitate people-to-people exchanges, European cooperation, and the integration between the EC Representation and local cultural partners, building upon the national cultural policy and Arts Council Malta’s strategy. It will pool together the resources and expertise of its members, and it aims to strengthen cultural dialogue, exchanges and sustainable cooperation in order to promote cultural diversity and understanding in the Mediterranean region. Its mission is to contribute towards the Sustainable Development Goals and to reflect and give value to the diversity of European cultures and common values through joint European events and projects.

The first event to be organised by the cluster – European Art House Cinema Days- is set to take place in November at Spazju Kreattiv, in Valletta.
Arts Council Malta is currently represented in a number of EUNIC clusters, both through its own ACM representatives, as well as through Embassies of Malta located in the respective countries. These include:
Arts Council Malta, through its new Strategy 2025 plans to increase its membership in several other EUNIC Clusters around the world, with the aim to further engage in international cultural relations and exchanges, and to support Maltese artists in showcasing their work internationally.
EUNIC Cluster collaborations are based on the guiding principles of the EU Agenda In international cultural relations as established in the 2016 “Joint Communication ‘Towards a EU Strategy for International Cultural Relations”. Restating the EU’s commitment to the 2005 UNESCO Convention, this document positions cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue as core values of cultural relations and “promotes a global order based on peace, the rule of law, freedom of expression, mutual understanding and respect for fundamental rights.”
Through culture, EUNIC strives to build trust and understanding between the people of Europe and the wider world.
