The restoration works will be possible thanks to financial assistance which amounts to €120,000 given by the Komunità Malta agency to be used in a range of essential works for the conservation of the dome, including the restoration of wooden apertures, the dome’s waterproofing and lantern, as well as the conservation of the stonework itself. The existing membrane of the roof will also be undergoing repairs.
“The Parish Church dedicated to St Mary is considered to be a cultural and historical icon in the community and is renowned for its stupendous artistry, including its elaborate stone etchings, frescoes, and the celebrated titular statue of the Assumption of Mary, which is itself an artistic masterpiece,” Minister Bonnici said.
“Through this new investment, the church will be restored because this is an investment which reflects our commitment to preserve and promote our national heritage. Through such initiatives, we will continue to implement our electoral pledge to advance and celebrate Malta’s unique heritage and cultural landscape,” concluded the minister.
From his end, Minister Byron Camilleri stated that the government remains committed to use all the tools it has to invest in the communities and cultural patrimony, because it is truly close to the people. “The Komunità Malta agency is working hand in hand with the community, as through this work not only will cultural patrimony be protected, but the church will continue to be used every day by the community,” the minister concluded.
The funding of the Għaxaq church’s restoration was possible thanks to a collaboration between Arts Council Malta and Komunità Malta.
Michael Pace Ross, the Administrative Secretary of the Archdiocese of Malta, and the Għaxaq Local Council were also present.
