Arts Council Malta is delighted to note that the Malta Pavilion at the 58th Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia has ranked among the top 16 pavilions singled out by the prestigious Christie’s international art magazine for its Pick of the Pavilions at the 2019 edition of the Biennale.
Titled Maleth / Haven /Port — Heterotopias of Evocation, the Malta Pavilion is also among the 25 national exhibits named by leading arts magazine Frieze as ‘the best on view in Venice’ this year -- out of more than 95 pavilions present at the event.
The acclaim for the Malta Pavilion comes ahead of the public opening on May 11 of the Venice Biennale — the oldest, largest and possibly the most competitive gig in the art world. Malta’s high rankings mean that the bar has now been raised for the focus and attention that our exhibiting artists Vince Briffa, Trevor Borg and Klitsa Antoniou are set to receive in the next months from art critics and the international art public alike.
With more than 80,000 visitors expected to visit the Malta Pavilion, set up in Venice’s Arsenale, the exhibition curated by Hesperia Iliadou de Subplajo-Suppiej is now set to reach one of the largest audiences ever to encounter the work of Malta’s creative artists on the world stage.
The Arts Council Malta team tasked with co-ordinating Malta’s participation at the Biennale is already in Venice with the artists, curator and production team, in an effort to ensure one of Malta’s best showings ever for its arts sector.
Arts Council Malta is confident the country’s success at the Biennale di Venezia will further inspire our local art scene to achieve quality creations that can hold their own anywhere in the world regardless of Malta’s limitations when compared to much bigger countries like the United States, France, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Italy, India and others — countries whose company Malta now enjoys in Christie’s top rankings for Venice 2019.
These results also mean that the rise in government funding for the cultural sector is helping achieve Malta’s international strategic goals for the arts as set out in the Create 2020 Strategy.
