Dance, acrobatics and music make up this week’s events for the Malta International Arts Festival (MIAF), organised by Arts Council Malta, taking place this July.
On the 8th July, the Vertical Waves Project will be turning the walls of Malta’s National Library in Republic Sqaure, to a stage, as performers combine acrobatics, dance and climbing to create ‘vertical’ performances. Born in 2010 out of a collaboration between Aldo Aliprandi, video and sound designer and Marianna Andrigo, choreographer and vertical performer, the Vertical Waves Project is an artistic process that mixes together research on body movement with sound and video in the spatial context of where the performance is taking place. Be it a building, a tower, a square... the space affects the development of the creation and determines the uniqueness of the action in relation to it. Using ropes and harnesses, the performers work safely to present a vertical dance quality that plays with a perceived lack of gravity. The performance mixes feminine delicacy with the strength of rhythm and acrobatics, exploring themes of relationships, loneliness, togetherness and waiting. Performers alternate and relate, constructing a series of tableaux defined by video projections. Performances by the Vertical Waves Project have been presented at dance and street art festivals, as well as private events in Europe and the Mediterranean.
The closing event of the festival, taking place on the 18th July at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, has been entrusted to the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO). With its extensive and full calendar of events, the MPO is the main cultural ambassador of the Maltese islands. It performs in about 70 concerts annually, which include symphonic concerts at the Manoel Theatre and the Mediterranean Conference Centre, opera productions in both Malta and Gozo, community programmes, as well as a number of other concerts of lighter musical genres in various locations in the Maltese islands. For this concert the MPO, conducted by Mro Michael Laus, will be performing a selection from Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet Suites, Tchaikovsky’s Fantasia on Romeo & Juliet and Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story.
The remaining events making up the programme of the MIAF will be announced on the 4th May, when early bird tickets will be available. Regular tickets will be sold from the 8th June onwards. Further details can be obtained from www.maltaartsfestival.org.
