2015 saw a 7.8% increase in cinema admissions, when compared to the previous year, according to new statistics released by the NSO

The survey looked at eight cinema establishments based in Malta and Gozo, with a total of 35 screens and a total seating capacity of 6,748. These establishments projected 375 different film titles - seven more than 2014, registering a total of 704,243 admissions. Total gross box office generated was of €4.2 million, almost half a million more than that generated in 2014.

Films originating in Malta saw a drop in admissions, notwithstanding the slightly higher number of titles (eight in 2015 and five in 2014). Maltese films accounted for 2.9% of total admissions compared to 4.2% in 2014. This is reflected in the generation of total gross box office, from €148,000 in 2014 to €100,000 in 2015. This decrease is more than offset when looking at films originating from the USA, which make up 79% of admissions – approximately an increase of six percentage points from 2014. UK films registered 13%, also a significant rise of three percentage points from the previous year. In 2015, films of foreign origin generated more than half a million more in total gross box office than in 2014. Read more.
