Culmination of an outreach programme for Junior College students organised by Junior College and Arts Council Malta

Honorable Minister for Justice and Culture, Dr Owen Bonnici officially inaugurated the art exhibition Being Calypso | Being Ulysses (BC|BU) at Junior College on Monday 18 November 2019.

BC|BU is an artistic project developed by Junior College and Arts Council Malta with the support of their sponsor, Bank of Valletta under the supervision and curation of Professor Vince Briffa. BC|BU is an extension of the artistic work Outland, developed by Professor Briffa as part of the Malta Pavilion at the 58th Venice Art Biennale 2019.

Junior College art and literature students had the opportunity to attend workshops and pitching sessions with Professor Briffa and College tutors throughout the year pushing their boundaries and understanding of the human condition with the aim of producing artworks. These works were based on experimentation pushing art students to explore the written text and language students to the pictorial form. The result of these workshops is six site-specific works of collaborative art using several media from tapestry to installations, to online audio-visual footage. The works are diverse just like the spectrum of human emotions and stories.

‘This exhibition is not only aimed at empowering students to identify and translate personal concerns into concepts for artistic creation, but is also positioned to give these young artists a public platform to help them find and develop their unique creative voice,” stated Professor Vince Briffa.

The official BC | BU catalogue will be launched during the closing of the exhibition on 29 November 2019. Individuals interested in obtaining a copy may write on info.jc@um.edu.mt until stock lasts. The exhibition will run for two weeks, from 18 to 29 November 2019 at Junior College during working hours, Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 17:00.
