The University of Malta is currently accepting applications for a new, two-year evening Diploma in Maltese Literature starting in October 2016. This is a part-time course in Maltese, with lectures on Monday and Wednesday from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. The diploma opens every two years and is being run by the Department of Maltese within the Faculty of Arts of the University of Malta.
The Diploma focuses on the critical analysis and application of literature in the 21st century and covers areas that are not covered by the BA programme in Maltese. Those who would like to apply for the course can do so through the University of Malta website at www.um.edu.mt/apply. Applications close on 21 July 2016.
Those applying must either have an Advanced Level certificate in Maltese, at Grade C or higher, or be over 23 years of age. Mature students applying without a certificate in Maltese will be interviewed by the Department of Maltese.
This diploma is being launched at a time when Maltese literature is going through a revival both on the national and on the international scene, one that is spurred by new and creative uses of the Maltese language. This new diploma responds to the needs and opportunities offered by this increased interest in literature written in Maltese and brought about by the cosmopolitan generation of writers of the late 20th and early 21st century like Immanuel Mifsud, who is one of the lecturers in this diploma, and by a contemporary critical appraisal of earlier works.
The units deal with the Romantic and Modernist period of Maltese literature, but also the writing of lyrics, the role of the reader in the ‘writing’ of literature, literary editing, creative writing, literature on the internet, review writing, the reading and presentation of literature on the radio and TV, and the organisation of public literary events. The diploma aims to engage critically and creatively with students, some of whom may already be broadcasters, event organisers, teachers, writers, or just passionate readers, and with the dynamic critical and creative milieu of Malta in the 21st century.
The lecturers are David Aloisio, Dr Josette Attard, Leanne Bajada, Glen Calleja, Prof. Oliver Friggieri, Dr Albert Gatt, Dr Adrian Grima, Chris Gruppetta, Caldon Mercieca, Dr Bernard Micallef, Sharon Micallef Cann, Dr Immanuel Mifsud, Emanuel Psaila, Mark Vella, and Alex Vella Gregory.
In partnership with the Department of Maltese, Banif Bank (Malta) plc will be paying the fees (up to a maximum of €2000), of the student who places first in the course. Arts Council Malta will be giving a financial reward (totalling €2000) to the four students who produce the best projects in the second year of the diploma.
