The new programme will be divided in two strands: The Young Artist Development Programme and Artivisti.
Following an evaluation of the first programme which saw ten young artivisti gain confidence, develop, build networks and flourish further in their fields Arts Council Malta and Aġenzija Żgħażagħ felt the need to create a more focused programme.
The Young Artist Development Programme will target the training needs of young artists between the age of 14 and 17. Chosen applicants will receive further specialised training in their field and also participate in an 18-month mentoring programme addressing the needs of young artists.
Artivisti, on the other hand, aims at sharpening a sense of activism through creative practice. The programme is developed to encourage young artists to hone a focus on bringing change and leaving an impact on the wider society through art. Selected artists will be awarded a package of benefits and opportunities for a period of 18 months. These include a grant of €4,000 for their personal creative development, the services of a professional mentor to support them in their artistic career, participation in an artist-in-residency and networking opportunities with other ‘Artivisti’. The programme is aimed at artists aged between 18 and 24.
Participants from both programmes will also become members of the Artivisti alumni community to support other upcoming artists in the forthcoming editions of the programme.
Through this collaboration Arts Council Malta and Aġenzija Żgħażagħ contribute to the implementation of the National Youth Policy and the Council’s Create2020 Strategy, with a particular focus on providing more opportunities for people to engage in creativity.
Artivisti accompanies other empowerment programmes by Aġenzija Żgħażagħ such as Taħziz, Divergent Thinkers, and music training for young band players which the Agency has been offering for the past years giving young people further opportunities in the arts.
Mary Ann Cauchi, Director Funding and Strategy at Arts Council Malta says: “Arts Council Malta believes in supporting young people at an age when their creative potential is still being moulded, in line with our mission of achieving higher levels of creative excellence.”
In her concluding remarks, Miriam Teuma, Executive Director, Aġenzija Żgħażagħ encouraged artists aged between 14 and 24 who show outstanding talent, passion for the arts and commitment, to submit a nomination. ‘We await nominations of prospective Artivisti with enthusiasm: these young people will be the face of the initiative, the life and soul of the Artivisti programme.
Nominations will be received until Thursday 4th April 2019.
