The aim behind this initiative is to continue promoting local artists, whilst setting a more creative working environment for the Council’s team and visitors. The 6 illustrations have been selected following a call issued in collaboration with the Malta Community of Illustrators. The selected artists are Daniel Borg, Sam Falzon, Inez Kristine, Fleur Scortino and Matt Stroud.
Present for the inauguration of the artworks were Arts Council Malta Chairman Albert Marshall and the Director Funding and Strategy Mary Ann Cauchi along with the Council’s directors and team members.
“This initiative continues to build on the Arts Council’s commitment to give space to local artists to promote their work and we believe that our premises are an ideal location to showcase such talent, both as an inspiration for our team and to create a more creative working environment”, said Ms. Cauchi.
Arts Council Malta Chairman highlighted the high level of work presented by the 5 artists and reaffirmed the Council’s commitment towards local talent, which is being provided new platforms to showcase different art forms.
The encouraging success of this call has led Arts Council Malta to issue a new call, inviting photographers to submit their work to be displayed in 11 different spaces around the Arts Council’s premises. Proposals should consist of a minimum of 2 photographs featuring the themes of the 2025 Strategy; Care, Create, Flourish. Artists Bios:
Daniel Borg
Daniel Borg (b. 1986) is a Berlin-based Maltese musician, artist, and draftsman. Daniel is well known for his musical work with a number of Maltese alternative bands and his current musical project Superlove. He graduated in Building and Construction Design at MCAST, Malta, and has worked with top firms in the field both in Malta and Berlin. He began teaching himself to paint in mid-2020.
As a visual artist primary focus is figurative painting. He uses the human body to convey various narrations juxtaposed against a varied colour palette of bold brush strokes to convey mood and emotion. There is an element of disjointedness and nostalgia in the works, which are enhanced by his modern take on chiaroscuro elements.
In 2020, Borg was invited by the Gabriel Caruana Foundation to exhibit his works in his first solo exhibition at The Mill, B’kara which was presented to the public in July 2021. Amongst other collective exhibitions during the same year, Borg was invited by the Embassy of Malta in Berlin to exhibit his work at the world-renowned Adlon Kempinski in Berlin.
Sam Falzon
Bainmarie (Sam Falzon) is a musician and visual artist who often mixes illustration and film photography with traditional and digital media to create expressive imagery. Music is always an inspiration. Its potent and varied abstract effects serve as benchmarks and goals for any of his work.
Inez Kristina
Inez Kristina, is an animation director, comic artist and illustrator. Inez used to live in Marsaskala, Malta before relocating to Viborg, Denmark to study Character Animation at The Animation Workshop. Her passions lie in art, storytelling, music and film, and anything that is a little out of the norm.
Inez has recently directed her first short film titled 'Cut It Out', which has been making its rounds of the festival circuit.
Fleur Sciortino
Fleur is an illustrator and designer who has worked in fields ranging from book and boardgame publishing, video game development, storyboarding for film, animation and design agency work. Her work has been published in many international publications and has worked with clients like Penguin Random House and Scholastic. Fleur is also an avid gamer, sci-fi fan and obsessed with tabletop RPGs.
Matt Stroud
Matt Stroud is an award winning Maltese illustrator and animator. He started out as a graphic designer but soon found his true passion was in visual storytelling. After completing an MA in animation, Matt now primarily creates colourful and bold illustrations for children's books and advertising, as well as animations for education, commercials and short films. Matt can always be found in his home studio working on a new picture book, animating the next episode of the popular Maltese animated preschool series Emme or experimenting with his style for some new project.
