The Tree of Life is a fashion project which explores the cultural status of art objects in installation, tackling the inevitable ‘mausoleumification’ of cultural sites through the design and creation of a fashion collection and its presentation in the form of an event. It is a nostalgic reworking of the heavily damaged, latent Medieval wall painting and decoration of the location chosen for the event, the Chapel of Bir Miftuh (managed by Din L-Art Helwa), which has recently undergone conservation and restoration, as well as an exploration of the state of ‘in-betweenness’ that the said wall painting currently finds itself in. In a sense, it is a manifestation of the liminal moment between states of being and preservation, and above all else, an exploration of fragments and their relevance in contemporary art and culture.

400ppm is a punk rock band formed in 2017. The members include Jean-Pierre Debattista, Lasse Ullven and Nicky Morales. Our upcoming album, entitled 'Stop the World on a Friday' will consist of 12 tracks. The lyrics are thought-provoking statements that aim to cast a light on the horrors of climate change, global warming and social injustice. All the tracks have been composed with one overarching belief in mind: to combat the many forms of injustice surrounding us we first need to question our way of life, then act according to what is right for the collective good of humanity and the planet.

This project is a solo exhibition at DESKO Art Gallery by Sarah Maria Scicluna, composed of a series of hand printed silk screen prints exploring various imaginary structures and their occupation of space. These structures all have one common departure; the cube. This form is explored in multiple ways, leading to different expressions of how these imaginary structures can exist, at times becoming something else. The exhibition would be composed of 11 silkscreen prints all be printed on 300gsm Munken paper, and will all be a limited edition of 3. These prints will all be printed by the artist in her own studio.

Être is both an inward and outward exploration, based on the concept of a journey as a meeting point of personal point of views. Denise Scicluna, Marco Scerri and Steven Scicluna, based in different countries (England, Scotland and Spain, respectively), create art that deals with states of mind, personal surroundings (cultural, geographical, architectural, natural landscapes), phases in life, personal journeys and discoveries, a mapping of personal histories and futures. By creating multiple angles they address a similar question - how do we use art to navigate life? - the exhibition will reveal an abstract connection that Denise Scicluna, Marco Scerri and Steven Scicluna share as well as distinct personal viewpoints.

This project aims to bring screen printing into the Maltese art scene. Screen printing is a popular medium for artists to present their work, however lack of studios and printers in Malta, makes it a daunting option for local artists, leading them to opt for digital reproductions. The project will culminate in a week-long exhibition in Valletta featuring 10 (or more) pieces by Maltese and Malta-based artists (including the applicant), which will be hand-printed by myself in Berlin. The pieces will be available as limited edition prints for sale during the event and afterwards online.

In other words, this project pledges to continue the relevant discussion on contemporary art in Malta and internationally, while offering the artists and the audience an experimental platform they can strongly relate to because of the connection to an event that affected everybody, no exception.

Dehumaneation is a multidisciplinary exhibition that will combine paintings by Shaun Grech (fluidly labelled as raw or outsider art), film, an installation, narratives, and critical debate to explore the space between dehumanization, humiliation and nation through a geopolitical and historical perspective. Curated by Raphael Vella and using Dehumaneation as an invented word, concept and probe, we will bring these three concepts together (Dehumanization, Humiliation and Nation) to address a range of instances and manifestations of this intersectional space. These will include: political violence and tribalism, colonialism, racism, disablism, gender-based violence, politics of borders and nationhood, identity politics, the assault on the environment, poverty and inequality, pandemics and unequal access, neoliberalism and neocolonialism among others.

Debatable Land(s) is the latest chapter of the long-term, research-based art project Fleeting Territories, resulting from the project Mapping Malta I- II, which took place in 2018. In the connection of the two actually opposing terms “fleeting” and “territory”, the Fleeting Territories collective see spatial coordinates not simply as stable or fixed values, but rather as aiding in the identification and negotiation of [in]visible mechanisms, which in turn organise and shape cities, land[scapes], human and more-than-human interconnections. Rights, laws, politics, and economies, as well as emotions play a central role in the appropriation of territories.

Pupae is a development upon a project titled KIN, whose objective was to create a collection of some 40 hand-made dolls and the stories about them, to the general public, through an exhibition and a bilingual catalogue. During the exhibition, two workshops will be held featuring the process of creation as well as the reflection of the doll as an object of anthropological interest. The exhibition is aimed to be held at Spazju Kreattiv’s Upper Galleries and form part of the organisation’s official artistic programme.

Project title: Darkness at Noon

'Darkness at Noon' as a collective exhibition will showcase the work of three Maltese artists; ceramist Paul Scerri, photographer Charles Balzan and painter Gabriel Buttigieg. These three artists have been chosen as their work is radically different in terms of form and style, yet it plumbs the same sphere of human experience and will thus be brought into dialog under the concept of the uncanny. The project will culminate in an exhibition at ‘The Splendid’ in Valletta, as well as a catalogue detailing the exhibition concept from an intellectual-curatorial angle. This venue has been chosen precisely because of its symbolic weight as well as its atmosphere. The publication will feature essays on the uncanny within the context of the art on display by (tentatively) Dr. Clive Zammit and Niki Young. The artists have outlined the process and trajectory of their work to the curators, Joe Philippe and Gabriel Zammit, who will use the uncanny as a tool for examining the unconscious compulsions that shape us as 21st C. creatures.

'Project Hold' will result in an original music album of the experimental/electro-acoustic/ambient musical genre or aesthetic - one which, has so far, been largely neglected by local composers. The album will offer its audience a unique and original sonic experience. It will be an “emotional time capsule in music”, documenting the COVID-19 pandemic through different women’s perspectives. This will be achieved through the use of female voice samples, extracted from recordings made by participants. These volunteers will each offer their own distinctive perspective on a shared experience - the current pandemic.

Based on 'The Decameron', this is a promenade performance that makes full use of the Manoel Theatre and its environs with a live performance whilst sticking to the current COVID-19 regulations. The framework of the original concept of the Decameron was that of a group of 10 people( six women and 4 men) who have 'exiled' themselves to a country house whilst waiting for the plague to pass. Whilst under lockdown they entertained themselves by each of them telling a new story over 10 ten nights. Therefore ten stories in 10 nights.

The applicant proposes a hands-on project-exhibition, culminating in a solo exhibition to form part of the MUŻA programme and will be held from November 5th until December 20th, 2020 within the Community Space plus Corridors at MUŻA - The Malta National Community Art Museum. Antje Liemann will, over a period of three months, work with a group of diverse and specialised individuals from Malta to develop their vision of possible post-covid futures. The artist takes our current situation of lockdown as absurdity – what has become accepted as ‘normal life’ in a very short space of time, would have been unimaginable only a few months ago. Antje Liemann wants to use this feeling as a starting point for the project’s concept.

ROSA is an experimental documentation of an undocumented scene – the queer scene, most especially lesbian butch, dykes, femme and trans people in Malta. Using multiple online and offline platforms, the applicant intends to create the first queer archive, which will also include new digital and physical artworks created through the collection of ephemera, live testimony, written text, and other material, which has thus far remained buried under the surface. The project derives its name from a 17-year-old from Luqa called Rosa Mifsud, who was Malta’s first intersex person to be allowed to choose their own gender.

Through a mixed media approach, the work unfolds through an intensive documentative research project which seeks to highlight life in Birżebbuġa. The desired result would be for an audience to engage in a dialogue with tangible realities outlining the beauty within the same uglification of the place. To be able to transmit and generate different emotions, the work relies on two main senses which are sight (vision) and hearing (audio). The artwork is based on experimental work blending photography, sound installation and drawings which become the common denominator of the narrative.

Collective have been invited by the European Cultural Centre (ECC) to exhibit during the 17th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice which will run from 21st May to 21st November 2021. The annual ECC exhibition, themed, “Time, Space, Existence” is positioned as a collateral event to the Biennale Architettura 2021. The Re | Stone project seeks to question the urgent environmental issue of construction waste in Malta; Re | Stone aims to develop, document and exhibit the process and outcome of reconstituting limestone waste into an innovative, contemporary, recycled and recyclable construction material. The final project will be presented in Malta as well as Venice.

Project title: Sarangu - a Maltese folktale

The project aims to adapt Maltese folk storytelling to popular culture by producing a graphic novel titled ‘Sarangu - A Maltese folktale’. The project will also be adapted into a virtual workshop on the development of world building and narratives. The graphic novel aims to be a 100+ page graphic novel set in 1813 Malta during an outbreak of the Bubonic plague which left a death toll of around 4,500 people. The book will loosely draw parallelism with the current pandemic. The ‘Sarangu - a Maltese folktale’ is part of a series of stories developed as part of the Bufies series, work done by Filfla Studio which take inspiration from Maltese folk, landscape and historical environment.

Project title: Imħabbatħabbat - Concept Music Album

Most of the tracks on this album are inspired from the direct experiences throughout the applicant’s life – these mainly being relationships and social awareness regarding refugees. One of the tracks directly reflects this issue; ‘People of the Sea’ - is inspired by the difficult journey immigrants endure to arrive to Europe and the amount of suffering they go through. Through this project, the applicant will be collaborating with the NGO Association for Justice, Equality and Peace. (AJEP), to produce an educational music video showing the journey these people have to endure. These stories will be transmitted to the public with a different approach to shed light on this issue with a touch of creativity. The album will contain songs in both Maltese and English.

Żepp is the initiation of Teatru Salesjan´s long term mission to participate in the local effort to nurture opportunities for new writings. This newly commissioned work is Teatru Salesjan’s first attempt at launching a programme into action that encourages new writers to work from page to stage. This first piece, that is to be performed in June 2021, deals with the very relevant theme of isolation, as viewed from a young thirty-year old; Żepp Ellul. This one hour, one man performance written by Anton Saliba, is narrated in Maltese and takes spectators on a journey into the past, reflects on the present, and dreams of a better future.
