‘Bil-Bieb Mitbuq’ is essentially a Maltese theatre project, having an innovative, multidisciplinary, intercultural and contemporary vision. It will be performed across five nights at Spazju Kreattiv. The project’s point of departure was the applicant’s personal translation of Jean-Paul Sartres’ Huis Clos.

Project title: INCIZJONI - An exhibition of etchings

“INCIZJONI – An exhibition of etchings” is a collaborative project between a group of eleven artists attending the Malta School of Art and specialising in fine art etchings. The final product of the project is an exhibition which will be held in May 2019, at the Malta Society of Arts in Valletta.

Project title: Object, Objetc, Objecc - an international collective exhibition at Spazju Kreattiv

This proposed exhibition, “Object, Objetc, Objecc,” will bring together the work of three international artists Liza Eurich (CA), Katri Kempas (FIN) and Letta Shtohryn (UKR/MT). The project explores methods of translation operating in a space between material and digital. The project seeks to bring together the work of three artists who will be responding to each other's work like a group chat or an email thread at the same time exploring the nature of an art object itself.

MoSTri will be a Music EP made up of 5 songs, all of which will be in the Maltese Language. The 5 songs will have some similar characteristics and styles. Emphasis will be put on the quality of the songs, and on the modernity that they present to the Maltese audience. Mostri EP will touch upon social issues, interactions and contemporary topics, and will present them in the form of a song with the Maltese language.

Scheherazade will be a multi-disciplinary and immersive installation built around the concept of a Soho nightclub. Valletta Contemporary will be transformed into a space where coercion and cruelty, love and violence, sex and entertainment will be made palpable. The installation will run between December 2019 and February 2020.

Project title: Certified Male

Certified Male (aka Man Overboard), written by award-winning Australian personalities Glynn Nicholas and Scott Rankin, is a definitive treatment of modern masculinity, using a theatrical blend of traditional 4th wall dramatic scenes, mime, stand-up comedy, physical comedy, direct address and songs to tell its story. The aim is to introduce an original form of theatre which is seldom seen in Malta - that of mime. It is a contemporary work that explores, in an emotive, yet very comical way, themes of manhood, morality, friendship, the ‘absent father’, political correctness and long-term relationships.

Pawlu Grech: a life in perspective will take on the format of a concert, proposed for mid-June, which will explore the shifting creative topology of contemporary Maltese composer and visual artist Pawlu Grech (b. 1938). The event, to be held at Palazzo de la Salle, will consist of a piano recital, a talk about the composer’s life and work, an exhibition of his visual art and a networking occasion.

Project title: ħożż il-ħsejjes

ħożż il-ħsejjes is a play on words. Ħożż in Maltese means to draw, scribble, sketch or doodle, ħsejjes translates to sounds, noises, therefore the project is aiming to draw sounds. The project is about merging and creating unlikely situations and materials. It looks at The Mill - Art, Culture and Crafts Centre, Birkirkara and draws inspiration from its past and present uses and its context. The collaboration between the Gabriel Caruana Foundation, Instrument Inventors Initiative and Mighty Box brings together a multidisciplinary team of creatives. The project will be developed together with children and young people.

Project title: Oratorio – Guzeppi

Oratorio - Guzeppi is a new oratorio being penned from Maestro Raymond Sciberras with Lyrics from Sebastian Saliba. The Saint Joseph Band Club of Ghaxaq will be producing this oratorio to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Saint Joseph proclaimed as the Patron of the Universal Church. This Oratorio will be executed by the Saint Joseph Band of Ghaxaq under the direction of Maestro Reno Busuttil. It will include various singers with the participation of a 40 people strong choir under the direction of Ms. Simone Attard. This oratorio will also feature a Narrator. It will be premiered at the Ghaxaq Parish Church.

Project title: Creative Writing in Art Criticism: A workshop with An Paenhuysen (Berlin, Germany)

An Paenhuysen, a Berlin-based freelance writer, curator, and arts educator, is invited to Malta to present the workshop: Creative Writing in Art Criticism. The workshop will be relevant to those either interested in or already engaged in writing for the arts, from students, bloggers and commentators, to anyone writing for online and print media, academia, or responsible for creating content and communications from within arts and cultural organisations and institutions. The workshop will begin and end with an online session, with the main component taking place in Malta over two days in November. The workshop will be open to approximately 22 participants.

This will be held in November at Sir Temi Zammit Hall (University of Malta), under the direction of Mro. Hermann Farrugia Frantz and with the involvement of visual artist Andrew Schembri.

Following on from the experience of the Medinea (Mediterranean Incubator for Emerging Artists) network, four European institutions from the musical and cultural sector: 1) ARC Research & Consultancy (ARC) from Malta, 2) Ente Musicale di Nuoro (EMN) from Sardinia, 3) Istanbul Technical University (MIAM) from Turkey, and 4) Instituto Politecnico de Lisboa from Portugal, joined 5) the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and its academy to found the Medinea strategic partnership and apply successfully to a call for Erasmus + application Key Action 2: Cooperation for Innovation and the Exchange of Good Practices (Strategic Partnerships for Youth). The Erasmus+ project will take place in the 5 partner countries with one of the project's modules of the Medinea Method taking place in Malta, for which ARC is co-organising with Festival d'Aix en Provence. The Medinea Method's purpose is to develop a teaching method for collective musical production in Europe and Mediterranean countries.

Project title: Messa da Requiem et Resurrectio et Vita

The Medina Foundation for Music is preparing for its upcoming project through its performance orchestra, the St Paul Chamber Ensemble. The Foundation will be presenting the internationally acclaimed ‘Messa da Requiem et Resurrectio et Vita’ which is a work of Maltese composer Mro Joseph Sammut’s. The work calls for a chamber orchestra composed of strings, woodwind, French horns, harp, timpani, keyboard and church organ, together with SATB choir and four soloists. For this unique performance, the St Paul Chamber Ensemble, has the pleasure of working with the original Alto and Tenor soloists who performed the premiere in 1991, Claire Massa and Joseph Aquilina, together with Rosabelle Bianchi as Soprano, Bass Albert Buttigieg and in collaboration of the St Monica Choir, under the direction of HE Chev Mro Mark Agius. This performance will be held at the St Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral, Mdina, on Friday, 8th November 2019 at 7.30pm.

Project title: Strangers in a Strange Land

Strangers in a Strange Land is a multidisciplinary exhibition about being female in a world narrated by and designed for men. Four contemporary visual and multidisciplinary artists have been asked to react to the status quo of a male-oriented world. The exhibition will provide a space for the development of experimental contemporary art, allowing artists to develop their practice, and exposing audiences to multidisciplinary works. The exhibition will take place at Casino Notabile, Saqqajja Hill, Mdina Walls from 3 February to 8 March 2020 - International Women’s Day.

Project title: Magna Żmien: Guido Stilon Photography Exhibition

The exhibition will explore the work of the Maltese photographer Guido Stilon (1932–1975). In 2018, Magna Żmien was approached to preserve his collection of over 10,000 negatives, of which more than 2,000 have been digitised to archival standards. Capturing Maltese life in the 1950s and 1960s with a vivid and surprisingly modern, insightful approach to the subjects within his frame, Stilon’s work encompasses street photography, scenes of urban, industrial and agricultural labour, and outdoor portraiture of friends and family. With the full cooperation of Stilon’s family, Magna Żmien will curate an exhibition of Guido Stilon’s photography, comprising high-quality prints, multimedia installations, a 35mm slide projection, and materials, objects and experiences related to his practice, contextualised with insights into his life gathered through first hand interviews with those who knew him.

5-5 is a dialogue about possible futures based on speculative architecture and created in CGI software. The main outcome of the project will be the creation of 10 computer-generated images, each depicting a complete 'possible future' with distinct architecture, flora and fauna etc. The images will be accompanied by short textual narratives detailing the research and inspiration from which that future is conceived. The main objective of this project is to provide artistic visual renderings of hypothetical urban and non-urban scenarios extrapolated from current issues, trends and data on the design and management of urban and natural environments.

Tryst Arcane is a relatively newly-formed duo between Alexia (vocals) & Julian (keys). The style of their music genre has been dubbed as ‘Minimal Dark’. With only 2 elements, namely voice and keys, they create new original songs, comprising of various atmospheric keyboard landscapes, some with church organ passages or classical piano influences. The duo will be producing a vinyl, comprising 5 original tracks and a music video for the track 'The Fall of Light' (lyrics by Gorg Peresso).

This application proposes to produce a CD album which will feature collaborations between the Big Band Brothers and a number of established artists who throughout their career have contributed to the Maltese literature, music and song. The collaborators include songwriters Walter Micallef and Alfred C.Sant, author Trevor Zahra, composer Paul Abela, veteran singers Mary Rose Mallia and Frank O’Neill, actor Ray Calleja and contemporary singers Pamela Bezzina. The result will be an album which will include a selection of new works together with themes from classical songs. Whilst most tracks will feature the 20-piece setup of the Big Band Brothers, there will also be tracks which will feature a percussion ensemble, piano and voice and a roving instrumental setup. The album will be launched during a concert at the Valletta Campus Theatre in October 2020.

Following four critically-acclaimed albums of original compositions, Sandro consecrates his new project to the essence of jazz tradition - improvisations on a repertoire from the Great American Songbook. Honoring jazz tradition without sacrificing creativity and innovation, and expressing a contemporary voice through traditional forms and vehicles - a veritable challenge for the contemporary jazz musician raised in a genre-blurring epoch.
