Project Title: Ara Ġejja

This project proposes an interactive contemporary dance performance which will explore the theme of traditional Maltese games. This performance, choreographed by Patsy Chetcuti, will be performed in different locations around Malta and Gozo. The aim of the project is to investigate what the average Maltese audience would like to see at the theatre. The choreographer builds a production centered around traditional Maltese games such as Passju, Ara ġejja l-mewt għalik, bum bum il-bieb. The company will also host a short workshop for the audience.

‘We Lost the War’ is a collaborative project between visual artist Ryan Falzon and curator Michael Fenech. The exhibition will investigate social and political themes related to violence. Workshops will also be held within the exhibition space and will consist of a guided tutorial, resulting in a series of works of flash fiction.

Project Title: Invisible Sculpture: The Un/seen Evergreen

‘The Un/seen Evergreen’ is a virtual sculpture created through augmented reality - the idea of overlaying digital information over our real world. Users will be able to download a free app and interact with a superimposed tree in St George’s Square, in Valletta. The project is inspired by the theme of nature and its place in society. The app will create an abstract rendition of a tree that will interact with viewers. The project will run for a whole year and the tree will be sustained by the visitors. The more people visit the app, the larger the tree will grow. The data collected during the project will be used to generate a visualisation of the interaction.

Project Title: Sensory Apparatus

An exhibition that will engage the audience via a Sensory Apparatus. Sensors are coded to react to the unique sensory inputs generated by each visitor and trigger a personalised audio, haptic and luminary response. Sensory Apparatus defies curatorial convention by embracing the invisible elements that are typically excluded, filtered or discarded from exhibitions and foregrounding these unseen elements as central to the contemporary moment. This theme will be expanded on in a public programme of workshops and curated tours that will accompany the exhibition.

The project consists in the retelling of African migration and refugee narratives to Maltese audiences – using live storytelling, creative writing and visual art. The project will culminate in a visual arts exhibition, a poetry book in Maltese, and a travel diary. Ancillary events include formal presentations of the work conducted in the course of the project, public readings of the two publications involved, and workshops. The project will be implemented in collaboration with third parties and structures, including Inizjamed, the Malta Mediterranean Literature Festival, the Malta Maritime Museum (Heritage Malta), possibly the Valletta 2018 Foundation and a number of organisations locally and abroad. Project Title: Layers

This project strives to enhance the artists’ artistic practice, and nurture new talent, with the belief that artists can provide opportunities for other artists, and that their creative skills can be translated into producing and directing talent. The main source of inspiration are St Agatha’s Catacombs in Rabat, Malta. The title is connected with the multi layers of earthy materials, segments of sedimentary rock and the thin layers of intonaco (fresco slacked lime) on which Malta's earliest Paleo Christian Frescoes are painted. This evokes a sense of artistic historical empathy with these visual features. It also makes direct reference to the artistic concept were the multiple strata of the music composition become one of the main elements of the work, which is then intertwined with the artistic installations, forming a multilayering of voices and visuals.

The etnika group sees the need to develop innovation on tradition by further developing the repertoire and documenting it for the legacy of the band and its musical repertoire.
