COVID-19 represents an unprecedented global emergency leading to unprecedented global measures. The virus has impacted different communities to varying degrees, young people have also been affected with disruptions to their formal and informal work, creating new pressures on their networks, personal, cultural and professional development.
Organised in collaboration with Studio 18, a community of creative practice and learning committed to nurture creativity and holistic development of young people through informal education and the performing art, this ACMlab explores ways in which the creative and cultural community can engage with young people during the global pandemic and react to the disruptions this has caused.
The session will be moderated by Jean-Marc Cafà, Creative Director of Studio 18 Malta and the Director of Education, Learning and Community for the Barn Theatre in the UK and Freelance Director. Jean-Marc is trained at the Guildford School of Acting, UK where he was awarded both the McGrath Citation Award for Talent and the Entrepreneurship Award, he is currently furthering his studies in Teaching and Learning for Performing Artists in Higher and Further Education at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, specialising in creating learning strategies tailored to cultural landscapes.

Angele Galea
Angele Galea has acted in various theatre productions including Edward Albee's Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (Manoel, 2004), Alfred Buttigieg's Dwar Menopawsi, Minorenni u Muturi High Speed (St James, 2012), Secret Sounds Stories (Altofest Valletta, 2018), the monologue Apotheosis (2019), penned, produced and acted in Waħda Minna (2019) and was Stephanie in the two hander L-Interrogazzjoni (Teatru Malta, 2020). She has also acted in several films including Largo Winch (Pan-Européenne, 2007), Agora (Cinébiss, 2008), Beat (Falkun Films, 2018), Lost Planet (Latina Pictures, 2019) and Project Icon (Pellicola, 2020). She is the artistic consultant of Science in the City and was the education coordinator for Valletta 2018 Foundation. She has acted in various TV adverts and lent her voice for a number of radio adverts. She holds Fellowships in Piano Performance and Music Theory, and is a presenter on TVM for Maltco Lotteries. Additionally she taught art at youth.inc, as part of their empowerment programme, and is the artistic director for More or Less Theatre. Angele is a registered teacher of Art, history and technique, Piano Performance and Music Theory. She has taken part in various collective exhibitions with her paintings, as well as solo exhibitions, the latest one being “The Insanity of Vanity”.
Ian Azzopardi Meli
Following three years working in the areas of Autism Spectrum Disorder and general Mental Health after obtaining his Bachelor Degree with Honours in Psychology, Ian furthered his studies and attained his Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology at the University of Malta. His major interest is psycho-educational consultation, which typically involves delivering targeted services to children and adolescents through parents, school staff members, and other professionals working with children and adolescents as the direct change agents. He has worked in various educational and clinical settings and currently works within multi-disciplinary teams at the Child Development Assessment Unit and the Children and Young People Services, with a focus on psychological and behavioural assessment, and consultation. Ian is also part of the Team for the Assessment of Attention and Social Communication, in which he provides services focusing on psycho-educational assessment and school interventions. He is currently collaborating in a research study with the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry at the University of Malta, aimed at investigating the involvement of frontal cortical EEG patterns in inattention at hyperactivity, with the aim to improve Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder diagnosis and intervention.
Simone Spiteri
Simone Spiteri was born in 1983 and trained for her Diploma in acting at the Malta Drama Centre between 1996 and 2004. She obtained her B.A. (Hons.) and M.A. in Theatre Studies from the University of Malta. She set up her own theatre company, Dù, in 2004 in which she performs, directs and writes. Her written and directed work has been performed in Denmark, Egypt, Sicily, Spain, Macedonia, USA, UK and France. Two of her written works Appuntamenti (2009) and Kjaroskur (2011) won first prize in the National Francis Ebejer contest for playwriting. Both Appuntamenti and Lacuna (2006), have been chosen as one of the 120 best plays for the European stage in the European Theatre Convention’s (ETC) bi-annual publication. She has written extensively for ŻiguŻajg International Children’s Festival to sold out performances withplays such as: Il-Ħajja Xejn Cool ta’ Teenager Jismu Julian (2012), #babydaddy (2014), Fly Flynn (2014) and Ineż kienet Perf(etta) (2016) with several re-runs and tours across Maltese schools. She has also written text work for young people for the Malta Philarmonic Orchestra and worked with several companies on translations of classics into Maltese like Pinter’s The Hothouse and the libretto for Orfeo and Majnun for Valletta Capital of Culture 2018. In between her company’s productions she often collaborates with other theatrical Companies on the main Maltese stages and has worked with MADC; Mrs. Warren’s Profession (2011), Twelfth Night (2011), The Winter’s Tale (2012), Skylight (2017), Unifaun Theatre; Olly’s Prison (2013) and The Price of One (2014), An Enemy of the People (2018). Her work as a director has included: Red for FM Theatre Productions and Lorca’s Blood Wedding at the Manoel Theatre where she worked as Drama Consultant between 2011 and 2013. An educator for 15 years she lectures part-time within the Theatre Studies department at the Unviersity of Malta and has published four History text books with Merlin Publications. In 2014 she was also an International Playwright Observer at New Visions, New Voices at the Kennedy Centre in Washington D.C. and a chosen writing resident at La Chartreuse in Avignon, France in 2016. In 2017 she also published her first fiction work with Il-Vjaġġatauri taż-Żmien, the first book in her Il-Vinkulari series aimed at young readers. The second book of the same series was published in 2019. Her play scripts were also published in 2019 with her award winning Appuntamenti and recently acclaimed Repubblika Immakulata in a double bill publication joining her already published Pinter’s Is-Serra (The Hothouse) and Kjaroskur.
Christina Cauchi
Christina started ballet at the age of 5 under the guidance of Mary Jane Bellia at ‘The Ballet School’. When she was 18 years, she was accepted to undertake Ba(hons) in Ballet Education at the Royal Academy of Dance in London specializing in Classical performance. Christina also achieved the teacher's Licentiate ( LRAD) making her eligible to teach all levels of Ballet. Upon graduating Christina embarked on her first job in Italy teaching Ballet and Jazz at La Scuola di Danza ‘La Sylphide’ in Rome. In the summer of 2008, together with Maria Cassar, Christina founded RedTape Dance Company - a project based contemporary dance company. RedTape Dance company gave Christina the opportunity to perform, choreograph and direct dance performances in festivals such as Notte Bianca and Evenings on Campus and Ziguzajg International Festival for children and Young audiences. On her return to work in Malta in 2008 Christina freelanced for four years as a tutor teaching both ISTD AND RAD ballet and Modern Jazz. During this time Christina also worked, The main role of La Sylphide at the Manoel Theatre under the Direction of Johane Casabene, as a Dancer with Contact Dance Company (Francesca Tranter), Moveo Dance Company (Dorian Mallia) , Dancer in the Malta Arts Festival under the direction of Mavin Khoo – khoo 0.00 0.01 A new reading of Swan Lake. In 2012 christina was accepted to read for a Masters degree course at the University of Malta specializing in performance (dance) focusing on dance education, choreography with a specific insight into interdisciplinarity and creating performances for children. In 2013 together with her husband Daniel Cauchi, Christina opened The Box - a creative arts space - a multifunctional studio space. This gave the opportunity to found Danza C as a dance school which specializes in teaching classical ballet, modern Jazz and Contemporary dance. In 2014 christina joined Moveo Dance Company for a year as a dancer performing regularly in Malta. In 2015 together with Dorian Mallia and Maria Cassar Christina choreographed and ‘See - Quatic’ for ZIguzajg Festival. In 2016 christina directed and choreographed ‘Tar mar riħ’ commissioned for the Ziguzajg arts Festival. Christina Cauchi currently focuses on running ‘The Box - a creative arts space’, ‘Danza C’ and working on creating new projects in dance and education.
Denise Perini
Denise Perini (b.2000)’s performing arts training lies mainly within dance, having trained in classical ballet and contemporary under the guidance of Joanna Vella (The School of Dance) and most recently with Christina Cauchi and Danza C. In 2017 she joined Studio 18 Malta’s Creative Lab and has performed in several of their pieces including: Dear Pete (2017), iLand (2018), DripFeed (2019) and Ineż (2020). She was also Cultural Ambassador for the company’s 2019 season. Recently Denise has delved into production and design and has served as an assistant stage manager for Teatru Malta’s Trikki Trakki (2019) and Larinġa Mekkanika (2019). She is currently Studio 18’s graphic designer and social events coordinator whilst reading for a B.A (Hons) in Theatre Studies at the University of Malta. Thereshe also serves as Secretary General and Acting Educational Officer for the school of performing arts’ student organization USPA, which allows her to further explore her passion for cultural policy and arts management.
Gianluca Mifsud
Gianluca Mifsud is a musical theatre performer and creative, currently in his final year of training at Performance Preparation Academy in Guildford. Before moving to the UK, Gianluca trained with Studio 18 Malta and performed in a number of pantos, musicals, and devised productions. He co-founded Ħassle Mejjet Theatre Collective in 2017 where he had the opportunity to perform and produce new theatre with other youth creatives. More recently he also co-produced The Memo Project, which is an online platform created in response to the ongoing pandemic, made to showcase new spoken word and music.
