Our next ACMlab session will focus on customer engagement as part of the core communications strategy for both local and international events, festivals and public funding.
Ray Calleja, Stefan Kolgen, Alice Azzopardi and Magnus Restofte will be delving into this topic which can be a game-changer, since the more engaged customers are, the greater the likelihood they will spend money on a company’s offerings and serve as advocates for its brands. By engaging customers effectively, both the private and public sectors can gain competitive advantage, increase customer loyalty, enhance revenue, and better manage their operational costs whilst managing internal healthy team relationships, hopes and expectations.
This lab session is meant to give participants an insight into diverse marketing strategies adopted by our four speakers including a few case studies.
The session will be moderated by Neil Attard on behalf of ACM.

Stefan Kolgen
Stefan Kolgen is a Belgian digital storyteller and transmedia expert based in Malta. He obtained his B.A. in sound and imaging techniques at the Hoger Rijksinstituut for Toneel- en Cultuurspreiding (H.R.I.T.C.S.) in Brussels in 1989. After working as a 35mm documentary maker, he switched to television and video and worked for several broadcast companies in Belgium and the Netherlands.
Due to his early interest in computers and BBS-networks (Bulletin Board Systems), he started combining storytelling with the upcoming internet full-time in 1993. Testing and introducing new technologies and communication tools within the work of (socio)cultural institutions is at the forefront of his work, as well as implementing them in projects involving as many people as possible in a creative process: e.g. CITY Chromosomes (2004), serious game RFID Snakes & Ladders (2006), transmedia theatre Paola246 (2007), interactive graphic novel Dansen Drinken Betalen (2014), transmedia community project Jefke Tuf (2015).
He was coordinator new media and community manager for several major cultural events and institutions in Antwerp: e.g. Year of Paul van Ostaijen (1996), Van Dyck 1999, Antwerp World Book Capital (2004-2005), Youth Theatre HETPALEIS (2000-2007).
He co-curated with Ann Laenen the group exhibition The Island Indoors with Maltese and Belgian artists and Aaron Bezzina’s solo exhibition Corpus Adflictum. Currently he’s working on the community arts project Fragile.
Together with Ann Laenen, he founded Experienced Design, a company delivering services for the cultural and educational sectors in strategic thinking, design thinking, experience design and marketing.
Magnus Restofte
Magnus Restofte has more than 20 years of experience within marketing and communication in the media, experience and art industry. Working for both the biggest broadcaster, the biggest live venue and now the biggest theater (The Royal Danish Theater) in Denmark, he is one of the leading thinkers of developing communication and marketing strategies within the experience economy. That is strategies that actually works and pushes the limits for what is possible with small budgets but big ambitions.
Ray Calleja
Ray Calleja is a household name when it comes to Maltese Television, with a 40-year career covering Television productions, Radio, Theatre and Film.
Ray started his professional performance career at age 11 when he was engaged by the education authority to perform in an educational television series aimed at children and transmitted during school hours. In his early formative years, he was mentored and tutored by contemporary authors and theatre directors (mostly for radio and theatre productions) up until joining the avant-garde group “Politeatru” in the mid 80’s. This decade long stint, along with his troupe peers, consolidated his love for performing and production. Participation included touring theatre performances locally, classic based productions at the National Theatre in Malta and performances abroad. These included Stratford-upon-Avon, The Globe in London, performances celebrating the fall of the Berlin Wall in Germany and various street and theatre productions in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Following his academic years (and an eclectic list of office related jobs) Ray then became a director for a newly established television station and both produced and presented a variety of shows ranging from discussion to game shows. Following it’s 3-year operation and eventual dissolution saw Ray moving on to the creation of his iconic comedy show “Bomba”. Ray produced and played the part of all 52 characters in the show with a total run of 5 series spanning over a period of 10 years and also producing various spin-off from the show. Within this period Ray also went into TV drama direction, producing 3 major TV series for local TV a Saturday afternoon entertainment show a 12 year run of a daily 3-hour live chat show on National TV.
2012 saw Ray taking a sabbatical from TV production and re-entering the academic arena, graduating in psychology and anthropology from the University of Malta.
Within his most recent major productions were his engagement as Artistic Director for CHOGM Malta 2015, which included the creation and direction of the Commonwealth Heads of Governments Meeting Opening Ceremony and also Culture Programmes co-ordinator for Malta’s Presidency of the Council of the EU locally and in Brussels in 2017. Ray currently is sub-contracted by Arts Council Malta as a Cultural Project Manager for various projects related with measures set by the current legislation. He is also the Artistic Director for “Premju ghall-Arti”.
Currently he is also the producer and performer in a series of concerts dedicated to Maltese Music and Literature, previously known as Kelma Kelma Nota Nota and now under the new heading of “Folla Nies”.
Alice Azzopardi
Alice Azzopardi is the Head of Marketing at Festivals Malta. Having studied Psychology at the University of Malta, Alice’s educational background revolves mainly around the social sciences; namely psychology, sociology and philosophy. Before joining Festivals Malta, her career included work in Research, Marketing, Events, TV Production and Theatre Production.
At Business Leaders Malta Alice helped set up and launch market research platform ESPRIMI and has led a number of research projects for Business Leaders Malta’s Employee Research, where she serviced clients like Hili Group, Konnekt, Browns Pharma, Arkadia Ltd, Microsoft. As a producer at Take 2 Entertainment she was the production manager for popular tv series ‘Deceduti’ and variety show ‘Min Imissu?!’ amongst other projects. Alice debuted her marketing career at international advertising agency TBWA/ANG where she handled high profile accounts like GO, Mapfre MSV Life and Banif Bank amongst others.
