Through this initiative, Arts Council Malta aims to create partnerships with a number of organisations in Gozo focusing on, and active in, the cultural and creative sectors. The organisations will help Arts Council Malta to deliver the ongoing strategy and aim to achieve the ultimate goal of placing arts and creativity at the heart of Malta’s future.

The partnership is intended to provide stable support for organisations to plan ahead, grow, develop and deliver their mission and vision in alignment with ACM’s strategic goals primarily addressing creative professionals and communities, namely to:

1. nurture creative potential and support its development into professional activity;
2. invest in artistic excellence;
3. connect Malta to the international artistic community;
4. provide more opportunities for people to engage in creativity.

Arts Council Malta will be receiving applications from voluntary organisations enrolled with the Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations that have the potential to make a significant contribution to the priorities and ambitions highlighted above. The funds allocated to the selected organisations will be covering activities happening in 2025, 2026, and 2027.

Who can apply?

The Investment in Cultural Organisations - Gozo is open for Voluntary Organisations enrolled with the Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations that are compliant with the Voluntary Organisations Act requirements, form part of the cultural and creative sector, and that have a registered address in Gozo.

The deadline to apply is Monday 30th September 2024 at noon. Late application cannot be accepted.

Project Title: Advancing the legacy of opera at Teatru Astra: a vision for the 2025-2027 productions. 

Amount awarded: €255,000 

The proposed project focuses on the production of major events revolving around the production of opera, staged in two separate performances annually, over a span of three consecutive years. This opera production will form part and serve as the highlight of Festival Mediterranea, a prestigious cultural festival organized annually by Teatru Astra. Each opera will feature an impressive collaboration between internationally acclaimed singers, local talent, the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Teatru Astra Opera Chorus. A distinct aspect of the beneficiary’s productions is the artistic involvement of Teatru Astra’s non-professional creatives, who contribute their skills in areas such as stage design and costume creation.

The funding scheme shall help the Leone Committee nurture partnerships with international and local artistic organisations, to hold productions in this esteemed Teatru tal-Opra Aurora […..] 

The operas and productions the Leone Philharmonic Society prepares are usually based on annual preparations, making it challenging to make improvements to the theatre stage, auditorium and faculties according to such productions. This scheme shall undoubtedly help the Leone Philharmonic Society plan, grow, develop and deliver top-standard operas and productions. 

 

Beneficiary: Gaulitanus Choir

Project Title: Gaulitana: A Festival of Music 

Amount awarded: €150,000 

Gaulitana: A Festival of Music is an international festival organised by the Gaulitanus Choir (VO/0688). Essentially it presents an eclectic variety of musical events in different genres – whether for the general public or educational – held in various spaces around all Gozo, whilst also bridging over to incorporate some other creative fields. A recipient of the EFFE (Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe) label of the European Festivals Association, it aims to offer a wide array of events to different communities living in or specifically converging on Gozo, thus also helping to nurture the island into a niche for elite cultural tourism and high culture., whilst adding weight to Victoria, Gozo’s bid to become an eventual European Capital of Culture in 2031. It has been dubbed as “a major festival of classical music” by the UK’s Musical Opinion magazine and as “Gozo’s main classical music festival” by The Sunday Times of Malta, with Italy’s OperaClick portal emphatically commenting that “Gaulitana and the island of Gozo absolutely deserve a visit”. Being the Gaulitanus Choir’s flagship event, Gaulitana is a direct offshoot of the choir’s raison d’etre: “to organise, promote and participate in concerts and similar activities”.

Project Title: Victoria International Arts Festival 

Amount awarded: €150,000 

Victoria International Arts Festival (VIAF) is Malta’s longest-running Festival of its kind. It is a Festival of orchestral, choral and chamber music, which runs for five weeks between June and July every year. During this time, Victoria joins the Festival cities of Europe and beyond, with artists from all over the world converging on Gozo to leave their mark on the soul of this gorgeous Mediterranean island. That is precisely what the Festival in the heart of Victoria, blending drive, professional ethos and the typical Gozo penchant for laid-back charm, has come to signify for an ever-widening network of patrons and admirers hailing from top music centres all over the world down to the cultural-minded visitor and local music lover. Culture makes places distinctive, engendering pride in the local community. It also makes a practical contribution in terms of sustainability, providing employment, encouraging learning and inspiring people to adopt creative and active lifestyles.

Project Title: SCJ projects 

Amount awarded: €150,000 

VoKali - The initiative being devised for the years 2025 to 2027 will encompass a diverse array of events and concerts designed to highlight the artistic progression of the choir and its members. The beneficiary’s endeavours are aligned with the choir's mission: to furnish the choristers with opportunities to further hone their vocal abilities and to advance within the musical spheres. The choir aspires to create multiple platforms for performance, thereby enriching the local musical scene while simultaneously educating and engaging attendees to enhance community involvement. Furthermore, the beneficiary seeks to collaborate with both local and international artists, musicians and cultural aficionados. Over the next three years, the choir intends to host a variety of artistic, creative, and innovative events in Gozo, Malta, and beyond. The objective is to explore new and challenging compositions, pursue high-calibre artistic productions and expand choral training internationally. 

 

Beneficiary: Chorus Urbanus

Project Title: Feel the Magic 2025-27 

Amount awarded: €90,000 

Chorus Urbanus places a strong emphasis on education and engaging the younger generation, as seen through the annual workshops and junior musicals specifically designed for the Chorus Urbanus Junior Choir. These events, open to the public, aim to nurture young talent and provide valuable learning experiences. The choir will also perform alongside a variety of local and international guest artists in several prominent venues throughout Gozo, further enriching the cultural landscape of the region. The events planned for 2025, not only honour the past but also look forward to a vibrant future for Chorus Urbanus and the community. 

 

Beneficiary: Gozo Youth Wind Orchestra Foundation

Project Title: Consolidate - Build - Embrace 

Amount awarded: €90,000 

Following the commemoration of its 20th Anniversary since its foundation in 2022, The Gozo Youth Wind Band & Orchestra (VO/1010) even through funds acquired through Arts Council Malta, enhanced established events, invested in further tools and launched new initiatives. Both The Gozo Youth Wind Band and The Gozo Youth Orchestra were established in 2002 following a successful tour in Gozo from The Derbyshire City and County Youth Wind Band and Orchestra. On the initiative of its founding music director Mro Dr Joseph Grech, young musicians hailing from Gozo meet regularly to prepare varied music repertoire to be performed in concerts purposely put up to promote their talents.[……]The Gozo Youth Orchestra strives to create new frontiers of opportunities to its members and to fellow musicians in Gozo. In fact during the past years, youth musicians in Gozo benefited from first-hand experience with youth musicians from France and Germany on a number of occasions in the form of master-classes, workshops, concerts and discussions that were extended beyond the immediate group within The Gozo Youth Orchestra to School of Music students and primary and secondary students in full collaboration with the Education Officer of Music within the Education Department and in the head of the Gozo School of Music.

Project Title: Cittadella Arts Festival 

Amount awarded: €60,000 

Over the last ten years the Cittadella has undergone a major revamp through two restoration projects and the Ministry for Gozo had the objective of consolidating this magnificent fortified city and keeping it alive! The proposed arts festival is certainly embracing this motive. The beneficiary’s objective is to provide every visitor in the sister island with diverse cultural experiences across different arts, genres and styles – all put together in one location – the fortified city of Gozo.
