The Arts in Schools Scheme is one of Arts Council’s Malta tools to sustain and support the cultural and creative ecology, with a focus on arts education. The Scheme forms part of the Council’s commitment to engage educators and creative practitioners in dialogue and collaboration. The aim is to encourage students and educators to engage with the creative and cultural sectors and to explore innovative pedagogical approaches for the application of the arts in schools. The scheme is also in line with Arts Council Malta’s objective of advocating for a broader inclusion of creativity and the arts in education strengthening further 21st century education and skills.

The scheme encourages collaborations between an educational institution and a creative practitioner for each project.

The objectives of the scheme are:

• To bring creative practitioners into schools and education institutions to work with educators and students to inspire, learn and create in a collaborative and innovative way
• To support projects that engage with the schools’ local community and the Maltese artistic scene
• To support projects which complement the curriculum for early years up to secondary education and strive to add value to the learning experience and to the institutions’ environments
• To champion innovation and collaboration across fields and encourage students to push the boundaries of creative arts within post-secondary and tertiary institutions
• To encourage collaboration between educational institutions, the culture and creative industries, and other relevant sectors such as science and technology.

Who can apply?

The Grant is open to educational institutions or college offering formal education from Early Years Cycle to Tertiary Education.

The deadline to apply is Tuesday 30th April 2024 at noon. Late application cannot be accepted.

Project Title:Giving Sound to Our Feelings 

Amount awarded: €2,375 

The project will involve youngsters / learners with severe social, emotional and behavioural difficulties (SEBD) (aged between 12 -15 years) from St. Thomas More College Learning Support Centre (Ħamrun), St. Margaret College Learning Support Centre (Cospicua) and National Schools Support Services Learning Support Centre (Gżira). They will be working with creative partner Cyprian Cassar EDM DJ and producer from Marsaskala, Malta, ex-member of Tenishia, 5 Years in a row ranking in the DJ MAG top 100 DJs of the World to compose their own electronic music. This project will give the opportunity to around 10 students from 3 Learning Support Centres to attend electronic music sessions with Malta's leading electronic music composer once a week for scholastic year 2024/2025. At the end of the project students will have their own music and the opportunity to perform it and share it with the public.

Project Title: Voices in Motion

"Voices in Motion" is a pioneering project in Malta that empowers immigrant early teens and involves their parents/guardians. Through immersive workshops at the Induction Hub School, it integrates professional-led movement sessions, narrative creation, and collaborative storytelling. The project features visual artists contributing to authentic scenography reflecting participants' experiences. Community engagement sessions aim to bridge gaps and dispel misconceptions, leading to a public performance showcasing narratives, movement expressions, and scenography. Multimedia documentation captures the immigrant experience, fostering empathy and challenging stereotypes, ultimately aiming to leave a lasting impact on societal perceptions.

Project Title: Folji Imnaqqxa 

Amount awarded: €5,000 

The objective ofthis projectis to give unique opportunities to three groups of students. One group will be exposed to sculpting. Unfortunately, art students do not have enough time to explore this art medium at school. Workshops with sculptor Antoine Farrugia will help them discover art from a totally new perspective - something totally new to them. A similar experience will be offered to a second group of students who will work with author Simone Spiteri. Many of them read her books. What a mind-blowing experience it will be to hear about techniques used by the author herself before creating their own piece of writing! Finally, a third group of media students will use the workshops delivered by professional filming crew Emotive Media, to create a final video of the whole project. The three teams will merge once the final writing piece will be translated into sculpture and recorded in film.

Project Title:ReThread Revolution

The school project for students with specific needs aims to cultivate inclusivity, creativity, sustainability and entrepreneurship in the educational setting. It emphasises the use of sustainable and recycled materials to upcycle and repurpose items, encouraging students to explore their creativity while learning about our environmental responsibility. Through hands-on activities and collaboration, students transform otherwise discarded materials into innovative items for everyday use, honing skills in design, craftsmanship, and problem-solving. This fosters a sense of pride and achievement as students witness the tangible results of their efforts. By accommodating diverse needs, including physical, cognitive, or sensory challenges, the project promotes inclusivity and empowers every participant to contribute meaningfully. Ultimately, by nurturing a culture of sustainability and creativity, the project equips students with the mindset and tools to become conscientious global citizens, actively shaping a more sustainable and inclusive future, whilst also instilling a passion for different forms of art.

Project Title:Luminous 

Amount awarded: €4,916 

The project "Luminous" is a collaboration between St Nicholas College Rabat Middle School and professionals from the arts industry. It aims to merge Science and Art through the artistic interpretation of LIGHT and will consist of 5 phases. The students will work with professionals from The More or Less Theatre Company to create diverse Creative Writing projects focused on different aspects of LIGHT, with assistance from science teachers for scientific accuracy. Students will then record and edit their work over chosen music. They will also collaborate with professionals from MOVEO dance studio to create dance choreographies reflecting the same theme, using various light sources for visual interpretation. The final product will be a photo journal documenting the process and the performance itself. Whilst engaging 40 students directly and around 400 viewers, the project will foster collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking, embodying a shift towards formative assessment and interdisciplinary learning.

Project Title:Devised Theatre Puppetry Project 

Amount awarded:5,000 

The aim of the project is to give the students an opportunity to work with experienced practitioners on a devised puppetry piece. This project is divided into two sections. The students will first work with an experienced practitioner to help in mastering the art of devised theatre. This will be done through a variety of workshops. The students will then move on to the create their own puppets to assist in the delivery of the narrative of their performance. Students will experience working on their devising skills to create an original piece and different types of puppets (string, rod, upcycled, stick etc), whilst learning how these are handled and used in a theatre performance. This project will instil collaboration and creativity, whilst giving the students the opportunity to learn and observe the arts on a professional level. Finally, students will learn about the work possibilities of the industry.

Project Title:Il-Canteen u l-Qaddisin 

Amount awarded: €4,902 

St. Albert the Great College in Valletta is faced with daily sound pollution. Compounding this issue, all its classrooms across four stories overlook the school canteen, which amplifies all the noise throughout the building. This project aims to transform this space through a unique blend of creativity, art, science, and technology. Led by designer Ms Donje Zammit, students will explore innovative solutions to mitigate noise while promoting community engagement. Using advanced 2D and 3D design tools, they will reimagine the canteen layout, incorporating the school's four Dominican pillars. Renowned artist Marcio Ghigo will mentor students in creating an art piece that embodies Dominican values. This collaborative project will engage various stakeholders, including staff, friars, Eco-Skola students, parents, and media literacy students, to create a vibrant and inclusive space that enriches the school's educational environment.

Project Title: From Paper to Wall 

Amount awarded:5,000 

This project aims to create murals on unpainted walls at Maria Regina Middle School, Naxxar, through a series of immersive workshops and painting activities, placing students at the forefront of the entire creative process. By empowering students to actively participate in selecting spaces for murals within their school, they will develop a sense of ownership and agency over their environment. Under professional guidance, students will collaboratively decide on mural themes, drawing upon their unique perspectives and creative visions. After finalisation, the students will be guided through the best way to exhibit their art from paper to wall. This participatory approach not only fosters creativity but also cultivates crucial project management skills as students navigate the planning, execution, and evaluation stages. As Maria Montessori said, "The greatest sign of success for a teacher... is to be able to say, 'The children are now working as if I did not exist.'"

Project Title: Interdisciplinary Murals: Exploring Malta’s Past through Art and Science 

Amount awarded:4,600 

"Interdisciplinary Murals: Exploring Malta's Past through Art and Science" is a collaborative project led by students in the Master of Art Education program at the University of Malta. Under the guidance of the international street artist Pep Walls, the project aims to create an outdoor mural on the campus, symbolizing the intersection between arts and science. Prior to the painting process, students will meet with professors researching across disciplines such as archaeology, history, and genetics that will present their research and inspire the young artists design a painting that reflects these intersections focused on Malta’s historical background. With the artist’s expertise, students will execute a mural that visually communicates Malta's history, incorporating insights from the three fields. Ultimately, the mural will serve as a tangible representation of Malta's rich cultural heritage, created through collaborative efforts between students, professors, and an artist.

“Kuluri u Riflessi” is an interactive ongoing journey where the pupils will be guided by the artist and the educators to unleash their creativity through photography and visual arts. Such techniques will be an integral part of the classroom activities as they will form part of the methodology used in class. In today’s world technology is a vital aspect of our lives, particularly in the pupils’ lives. This project will shed light on a different use of technology, where students will learn skills to use it in a diverse and creative way. These workshops will provide a tangible and technical application of how technology can be merged with visual arts.
