Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, in cooperation with K2 Contemporary Art Center, is organizing the first Izmir Mediterranean Biennial between the 1st of October and 5th of December, 2022.

Curated by Caroline David, the event will bring together 30 young artists from the Mediterranean countries with the people of Izmir. Didem Yazıcı, Executive Director of BJCEM Federica Candelaresi, João Ribas and Sana Tamzini who have works on the Mediterranean, are creative consultants of the event. The Biennial will meet the audience on a route consisting of Izmir's featured venues and public spaces. The theme of the event is determined as “Looking at the Same Water” in order to study the cultural and historical codes of the Mediterranean.

The first Izmir Mediterranean Biennial will be held with young artists within the context of the 2022 European Year of Youth. The biennial determined the age criteria by taking the standards of BJCEM, of which Izmir Metropolitan Municipality is a member, as a reference. Izmir Mediterranean Biennial aims to open space for new forms of expression by emphasizing the “young” in the context of BJCEM standards and the European Year of Youth.
