The ARD music competition board is inviting again young musicians (born between 1991 and 2003) to apply for 2020, this time in the category Piano, Trombone, Flute and String Quartet. The application deadline is 31 March 2020.

ARD Music Competition 2020 Conditions of Participation

Applications for the 2020 International ARD Music Competition to be made through between February 15 and March 31.

The 69th ARD International Music Competition in Munich is open for the following categories:

  • Flute
  • Trombone
  • String Quartet
  • Piano

The invitation to participate in this competition is extended to young musicians, who are ready to launch an international career.

The competition is open to musicians of all nations born between 1991 and 2003 in the categories flute, trombone and piano. String Quartet: average age maximum 120; single members neither younger than 17 nor older than 35.

The competition will be conducted during the period from September 2 to 20, 2019 (including the prizewinners’ concerts). All auditions are open to the public.




All applicants are obliged to provide a video recording, that has to meet the following requirements:



  • Recent (less than 12 months old) video recording, containing the required program for the preliminary audition only (no YouTube links).


  • Pieces must be recorded in their entirety and have to be UNEDITED (no cuts).
  • movements can be sent as single files
  • Microphones should be positioned at a distance allowing to obtain a good sound quality.
  • The video must be filmed from the side in a 45-degree angle, using a fixed and wide camera angle; musician’s hands and face must remain visible all the time.
  • Public recordings are accepted if they meet the recording conditions stated above (especially no cuts).

Technical specifications (suggested)

  • Video quality - 720p or 1080i or 1080p
  • Audio quality - 256kbps mp3 or 128aac
  • Microphone of adequate quality (no built-in smartphone mic)
  • File Format – mp4 or mov
  • max. 9 Mbit, max. 900 MB
