The European Film Festival brought to Malta by EUNIC returns for its sixth edition from Tuesday 15 to Sunday 20 September 2026, with ten contemporary films from ten different countries.

Three of this year’s screenings will be followed by a discussion with the teams behind the films. The festival opens on 15 September with Wishbone, a Greek drama about a hospital security guard drawn into a medical scam, with the director present for a Q&A with the public.

On 16 September, the Polish film The Altar Boys, in which a group of altar servers takes justice into its own hands, is followed by the Maltese feature Ciao Ciao: four couples, one chaotic night, and a Q&A with the cast and screenwriters. This year will also feature the Oscar & BAFTA-winning documentary Mr Nobody Against Putin, by David Borenstein and Pavel Talankin. This 2025 documentary tells the story of a Russian teacher secretly documenting his small-town school’s transformation into a war recruitment centre during the Ukraine invasion.

The remaining programme spans Italy’s Duse, on the actress Eleonora Duse returning to the stage as fascism rises; France’s The Fourth Wall, David Oelhoffen’s adaptation of Sorj Chalandon’s novel about staging Antigone in wartime Beirut; Germany’s 22 Lengths; Hungary’s Brazilians; the Dutch feature Our Girls; and Spain’s House on Fire. All films are screened in their original language with English subtitles.

The festival is organised by the Malta cluster of EUNIC, the network of European Union National Institutes for Culture, whose members include the Embassies of Spain, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Netherlands and Poland, together with the Alliance Française de Malte-Méditerranée, the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, Arts Council Malta and the Representation of the European Commission in Malta.
