Nominations are currently open for the second edition of Il-Premju għall-Arti, the national awards that celebrate Malta’s artistic achievements.
Il-Premju għall-Arti is Malta's most prestigious award that acknowledges excellence in artistic work premiered during the year.
As highlighted in Strategy2020, the Awards give recognition to individuals and organisations who have excelled in their contribution to the advancement of Malta’s cultural and creative sectors.
Audiences will have a greater say in this year’s awards; not only is it possible for members of the public to directly nominate a production for the Audience’s Choice Award but nominees for the Lifetime Achievement Award will also be proposed directly by the public.
This year there will also be a new category: the Innovation award, which will seek to recognise the most innovative artistic project of the year based on the methodology of research, implementation, display and representation. The award acknowledges projects who through the use of innovative concepts and practice have pushed artistic boundaries and contributed to the advancement of the arts.
In total there will be 11 different categories and awards: Best work for young audiences; Best project in the community; Best artistic programme or season; Production of the year; Best international achievement; Best creative enterprise; Young artists of the year; Artist of the year; Innovation award; Lifetime achievement and Audiences’ Choice.
The Ambassador of the Arts award will be open for adjudication every three years, with the next appointment in 2021.
The eligibility period for the awards is between 1st September 2017 and 31st August 2018.
Winner will receive the award, a sculpture in glass and ceramic by Maltese artist Kane Cali.
The nomination process for the awards is based on an open call for nominations. Nominations received for the Audience’s choice award will go through two stages: shortlisting by the adjudication board and public voting.
Nominations may be submitted by Maltese or Malta-based individuals, organisations as well as public and/or private entities, depending on the category. Self-nominations are also accepted.
All nomination forms are evaluated according to established criteria and questions, as outlined in the guidelines. Eligible forms will be assessed by a Jury composed of independent evaluators and Arts Council Malta representatives.
The announcement of the nominees will take place in February 2019 while the official awards ceremony will take place in April 2019.
Nomination forms can be submitted until 7 December 2018 (noon). Late applications will not be accepted.
