Owing to the extraordinary times that we are living in due to the spread of COVID-19, the awards ceremony was live-streamed for the first time on Arts Council Malta’s Facebook page. The live-streamed event was hosted by Ray Calleja, Artistic Director of Premju għall-Arti.
The winners, of the ten competitive categories and three non-competitive honours, included Charles ‘Ic-City’ Gatt receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award and Bank of Valletta who received the Honour for Cultural Promoter for the Arts. The Audience’s Choice Award, which was voted by members of the public, was won by André Agius for his production of 2.0 Watts in the Dark. Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti, received the Best Production Award for Music in Malta - From Prehistory to Vinyl Exhibition.
Other categories included Best Creative Enterprise, Best International Achievement, Young Artist of the Year and Best Artist of the Year. The categories were selected according to Arts Council Malta’s strategic priorities as outlined in the Council’s Strategy2020, its five-year plan for the cultural and creative sectors.
During the stream, Minister Dr Herrera stated that “The Malta Arts Awards is a very important occasion where today, given the circumstances we are living in, we are still honouring artists’ successes for this year. I take this opportunity to encourage more Maltese and Gozitans to become more involved in this prestigious sector.”
The winners were selected by a jury of sectoral experts and Arts Council Malta representatives from the nominations submitted through an open call.
The Awards covers projects, productions or activities in the cultural and creative sectors which have been premiered or presented between 1 September 2018 and 30 September 2019.
The winners will receive a prestigious award, a sculpture in glass and ceramic, by Maltese artist Kane Cali. This sculpture is a new edition and its design has evolved from the previous two editions.
“Having come face-to-face with the challenges that are threatening us, resilience and a positive attitude should serve as guidelines for us. Keeping this in mind we found a way for the show to go on and, thanks to the electronic platform, the 2020 Malta Arts Awards is not being binned. It is very important for the cultural and artistic sector to recognize the artist for his work at any cost, especially in these times” said Arts Council Malta’s Executive Chairman Mr Albert Marshall.
