Project title: VULCAN XM645
Amount awarded: €13,394
It was the 14th of October 1975. As part of their routine practice, several Royal Airforce aircrafts visited Malta for their ‘air practice gallery camp’. After the arrival of 3 Phantom aircrafts, the Avro Vulcan XM 645 approached the RAF Luqa runway for what seemed like another perfect landing approach. Something went wrong. The Vulcan’s port wing was observed hitting the runway and made a rough contact from what seemed to be a hard landing from the Co-Pilot, Flying Officer E. G. Alexander. Lieutenant G. R. Alcock took control of the aircraft and managed to force it back into the air, planning a circuit and an emergency landing. However nothing went as planned. There was no second landing. The Vulcan XM 645 exploded while in flight, with major parts of this mighty aircraft falling onto one of Malta south localities – Żabbar.
