{"id":9446,"date":"2025-02-17T13:53:31","date_gmt":"2025-02-17T13:53:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/artscouncilmalta.gov.mt\/?p=9446"},"modified":"2025-08-29T03:18:17","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T01:18:17","slug":"arts-council-malta-announces-representation-details-for-the-malta-pavilion-at-the-59th-international-art-exhibition-la-biennale-di-venezia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artscouncilmalta.gov.mt\/en\/arts-council-malta-announces-representation-details-for-the-malta-pavilion-at-the-59th-international-art-exhibition-la-biennale-di-venezia\/","title":{"rendered":"Arts Council Malta announces representation details for the Malta Pavilion at the 59th International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Malta Pavilion, entitled&nbsp;<strong>Diplomazija&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>A<\/strong><strong>stuta<\/strong>, features a collaboration between artists Arcangelo Sassolino (ITA), Giuseppe Schembri Bonaci (MT) and composer Brian Schembri (MT), who will re-articulate Caravaggio\u2019s seminal altarpiece&nbsp;<strong>The Beheading of St John the Baptist<\/strong>&nbsp;(1608) as an immersive, kinetic, sculptural installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through their signature artistic vocabularies, Sassolino, Schembri Bonaci and Schembri will bridge this Biblical narrative with contemporary culture, transposing the zeitgeist of the Oratory of the Decollato in Valletta (the site of Caravaggio\u2019s ground-breaking canvas since the 17th century) onto the Malta Pavilion.&nbsp;<strong>Diplomazija&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>A<\/strong><strong>stuta<\/strong>&nbsp;subsequently re-situates Caravaggio\u2019s immanent themes within modern life, addressing many of the global challenges we face in today\u2019s world, from inequality to justice and peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/artscouncilmaltagovmt.skipdns.link\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1631281990.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Anchored in Maltese creative talent and art history,&nbsp;<strong>Diplomazija&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>A<\/strong><strong>stuta<\/strong>&nbsp;elevates the potential for art to lead us forward through complex moments in time. Commenting on the Malta Pavilion, Minister Jos\u00e9 Herrera stated that \u201c<em>with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals at the forefront of our minds, this iteration of the Maltese Pavilion demonstrates how art can represent society\u2019s ideologies and ideals. Our Malta project presents a transcendent cultural experience where beholders imagine a path towards reconciliation.
