{"id":9081,"date":"2025-02-14T10:31:29","date_gmt":"2025-02-14T10:31:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/artscouncilmalta.gov.mt\/?p=9081"},"modified":"2025-08-29T03:18:23","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T01:18:23","slug":"panorama-europe-film-festival-in-new-york-maltas-limestone-cowboy-screened-to-a-full-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artscouncilmalta.gov.mt\/en\/panorama-europe-film-festival-in-new-york-maltas-limestone-cowboy-screened-to-a-full-house\/","title":{"rendered":"Panorama Europe Film Festival in New York: Malta\u2019s Limestone Cowboy screened to a full house"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Presented by Arts Council Malta as part of New York\u2019s Panorama Europe Film Festival,&nbsp;<em>Limestone Cowboy&nbsp;<\/em>was one of nine films directed by female directors at this year\u2019s edition of the Festival \u2014 which also had Malta participating for the fourth year running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Writing for&nbsp;<em>The<\/em>&nbsp;<em>Clyde Fitch Report<\/em>, Jos\u00e8 Solis praised Mallia\u2019s sense of compassion for the film\u2019s main character \u2014 Karist \u2014 as making the film \u2018a rarity: a work that dares not judge a character that might be reviled or patronized by audiences.\u2019&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mallia\u2019s boisterous, well-crafted film is brought to life by the performances of its lead actors Paul Portelli and Davide Tucci. Portelli plays the eponymous, hat-donning cowboy Karist, a hero in his own mind, driven by his love of the mythical American west to be Malta\u2019s saviour by contesting the island\u2019s elections. While Davide Tucci plays Karist\u2019s son who is, struggling to save what is left of his family\u2019s respectability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both Portelli and Tucci were in New York and took questions from the audiences in highly engaged Q&amp;A sessions after each screening \u2014 with Portelli stating he was \u2018truly bowled over by a very articulate and curious audience\u2019 at the Bohemian&nbsp;National Hall session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/artscouncilmalta.gov.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1559215243.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now in its eleventh edition, the Panorama Europe Film Festival is a high-profile event and an important one for Malta to be part of. Curated by David Schwartz, Curator-at-Large for the Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI), the festival is co-presented by the members of European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) together with MoMI.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schwartz himself has described the 2019 edition, which featured actors of stature such as Maria Dragus and Marie Ba\u00fcmer, as placing \u2018a focus on the myriad of ways that the pressures and anxieties of modern life filter down into the most intimate aspects of personal identity.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event afforded Malta\u2019s team an opportunity to network and open up new opportunities for collaboration, projects and other avenues for participation. These included a visit to The Actors Studio which, Portelli noted, \u2018afforded us the opportunity to meet experts and create contacts, and to watch the masters at work.\u2019 The sessions at The Actors Studio were moderated by Tony Award-winning actor Michael Aronov.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arts Council Malta in New York will continue with its efforts to ensure Malta\u2019s creatives have high-profile international platforms where they can exhibit, share their art, and receive quality feedback on their work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The New York premiere screening of Limestone Cowboy, Maltese director Abigail Mallia\u2019s new film, was presented by Arts Council Malta at the prestigious Museum of the Moving Image on May 5th with positive reactions and strong response from the audience.
