{"id":8561,"date":"2025-02-14T06:57:17","date_gmt":"2025-02-14T06:57:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/artscouncilmalta.gov.mt\/?p=8561"},"modified":"2025-08-29T03:18:30","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T01:18:30","slug":"summer-carnival-parade-along-the-marsascala-promenade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artscouncilmalta.gov.mt\/en\/summer-carnival-parade-along-the-marsascala-promenade\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer Carnival &#8211; parade along the Marsascala promenade"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A successful event for the past three years, popular with the Maltese community but especially with tourists who visit the Maltese islands in the summer months, the Summer Carnival is being organised once again from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first time in four years, this year&#8217;s festivities will include the introduction of a carnival parade along the Marsascala promenade on Sunday 21<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;from 19:00 onwards. This is the first time that the summer carnival is also reaching the southern part of the island, allowing participants and passers-by alike to enjoy the vibrant and festive activities across different parts of the island.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rest of the programme will take place as usual in Bu\u0121ibba, a tourist hotspot where the summer carnival is quickly becoming an awaited, yearly event. On both Friday 19<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;and Saturday 20<sup>th<\/sup>, the traditional&nbsp;<em>\u0121ostra&nbsp;<\/em>will take place at the bay below Bu\u0121ibba square. This will be followed by a&nbsp;<em>d\u00e9fil\u00e9<\/em>&nbsp;and parade along the main streets of Bu\u0121ibba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/artscouncilmalta.gov.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1470816678.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<em>\u0121ostra<\/em>&nbsp;is a traditional game which goes back to the Knights&#8217; period. The word is derived from the Italian&nbsp;<em>giostra<\/em>, meaning tournament. Locally, however, it refers to a game in which a large pole is mounted on a barge or on a pier, and smeared with grease and animal fat.
