Malta National Symposium Launched
Minister for National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, announced the launch of the National Charter for the Status of the Artist. He made the announcement while addressing the third edition of the State of the Arts – Malta National Symposium.
The purpose of the Charter is to provide a dynamic framework of reference for any legislation, policy or initiative that has a direct or indirect impact on the cultural and creative sector. The Charter describes in a cohesive manner the social, economic and legal status of Maltese artists and the standards and legislative actions required to protect and enhance such status in the Maltese Islands.
“Today I am pleaded to mark the third edition of this important cultural symposium which has truly become a pillar in the formation of our creative sectors. This national event is playing a crucial role in shaping future generations of artists and creatives, and is leaving a lasting legacy on the cultural scene,” said Minister Bonnici.
He explained how the launch of the National Charter is one of the priorities in Arts Council Malta’s Strategy 2025 and is inspired by the UNESCO Recommendations on the Status of Artists and its subsequent developments. He added that this supports and promotes working conditions where artists and cultural and creative practitioners can create their ideas and succeed in their aspirations.
Bonnici further explained that this National Charter was preceded by a thorough public consultation process and provides a dynamic framework of reference for any legislation, policy or initiative that directly or indirectly affects artists and the cultural and creative sectors, ensuring that any action is aligned with the long-term vision to improve the status of artists in Malta.
Arts Council Malta Executive Chairman, Albert Marshall, noted: “This symposium is very important because it allows us to foster intersectoral collaboration and consultation with artists and creative practitioners gathered under the umbrella of Arts Council Malta. Meaningful consultation and dialogue with all stakeholders is essential to ensure that our policy and approach are shaped by those directly involved, and perhaps even those indirectly involved, in the creative sectors.”
