State of the Arts Symposium – Renewing Common Pathways Report

The State of the Arts Symposium is a biennial event organised by the Arts Council Malta. It is a significant event in Malta’s cultural calendar. The third edition, held at the University of Malta campus in Valletta in October 2024, focused on the theme Renewing Shared Pathways and aimed to address the practice of community-building through art and culture.

The symposium serves as a platform for artists, creative practitioners, policymakers, and other stakeholders to engage in meaningful dialogue about the current state and future of the artistic and creative sectors in Malta. The event included a series of keynote speeches, panel discussions, workshops, and networking opportunities, all of which created synergy between different sectors and ensured that policies are shaped through meaningful consultation with the artistic community.

One of the key events of the 2024 symposium was the launch of the National Charter on the Status of the Artist—an important step toward recognizing and improving the working conditions of artists in Malta. This charter was signed by Public Cultural Organisations and the Council as a commitment to support and strengthen the artistic community.
