Through the project Walking with our nose: Smellscapes exploring the everyday, the Year 9 and Year 10 Art option students of St Edward’s College, in collaboration with artist Kristina Borg, will be able to widen their understanding and exploration of the landscape and immediate everyday surroundings of their college context through a multisensory approach. This will be achieved by walking with and through the context, and guided by the olfactory sense. By detecting, differentiating, describing, documenting and depicting multiple and diverse smells within the everyday college context, the students will be able to map and create their own visual smell narratives. The process and results will be shared with the wider college community through a final school-based exhibition.

Project Title: Conference in Creation – A Student-Led Media Experience

“Conference in Creation” is a student-led media project by the Malta Visual and Performing Arts School aimed at empowering students aged 11–15 to design, plan, and deliver a professional-style conference. Through guided workshops with creative practitioners and in collaboration with the Mediterranea Tourism Forum, students will explore media production, branding, public speaking, digital storytelling, and event management. The project culminates in a live conference, showcasing student-led content and promoting interaction with the wider community. The project supports the Media VET curriculum, nurturing creative and technical skills while encouraging teamwork, innovation, and self-expression. It also promotes access to cultural participation, aligns with the Right to Culture and the Charter for the Status of the Artist, and fosters stronger links between education, industry, and the arts.

Project Title: Ambient

Ambient is a multidisciplinary art project exploring identity, emotional wellbeing, and connection within our diverse school community. Rooted in Edward de Bono’s Six Thinking Hats—especially the red (emotions), yellow (positivity), black (caution), green (creativity), white (facts), and blue (planning)—the project invites students to reflect on their experiences through storytelling, movement, sound, and visual art. Students engage in personal storytelling, explore contrasting environments near our school, and create a visual piece inspired by Maltese maduma tiles, broken and repaired using Kintsugi known to symbolize resilience. Dance and movement are encouraging embodied expression, while ambient soundscapes and recorded voices are integrated into a final multisensory installation. Ambient brings hidden emotional narratives to the surface, fostering empathy, presence, and collective healing. It transforms shared space into shared meaning—celebrating diversity as an opportunity for growth, curiosity, and deeper understanding.

Project Title: Dancing to Empower Personal Growth, Creativity, and Cultural Participation

This project is seeking to provide opportunities for 11-16 year old students with neuro/developmental disabilities at Guardian Angel Secondary School with creative dance and movement sessions. These sessions support creative expression and provide avenues to explore the implementation of our students’ cultural rights and foster an inclusive approach towards culture. They will provide a creative space for students to express themselves in new ways and explore their creativity. Students will be provided with culturally-rich, creative opportunities to express feelings they might not have words for, while improving their motor skills. With this project we aim to offer regular, weekly sessions of Dance and Creative Movement Therapy as part of the students timetable. These will be delivered by a certified Dance and Movement Therapist, Sarah Vella, who brings boundless levels of energy, creativity and enthusiasm, and specializes in working with children with disabilities.

Project Title: Traces of Pembroke: seeing with our feet, walking with our eyes

Their experiences, emotions, and reflections will be translated into a permanent ceramic mural within the school, fostering a lasting sense of belonging, stewardship, and environmental care. The project emphasizes active student engagement, inclusivity, and place-based learning, nurturing creative expression and a deeper relationship between the students, their community, and the natural world.

Project Title: Xplaħħ u n-nannu Bertu

“Xplaħħ u Nannu Bertu” builds on a project funded by the Malta Arts Council in 2022-23 “, Baqbaq u Xplaħħ”, by introducing kindergarten students to Maltese traditions and language through artistic activities. Led by artist Sean Briffa, the story features Xplaħħ, the alien puppet, and Nannu Bertu, as they explore cultural themes with students as storytellers.
Throughout the year, students will participate in hands-on experiences related to national celebrations, such as creating a Christmas presepju, joining Carnival festivities, engaging in regatta activities, gardening in April, and dreaming about the future in May. Their journey will culminate in a collaborative “Big Book” showcasing their voices and artwork.
The project emphasises skills like empathy and collaboration while fostering creativity. Through documentation and feedback, it remains inclusive and child-centred, highlighting that art is about the creative process as much as the final product. Xplaħħ symbolises the importance of inclusion and community connection.

Through a stimulating and supportive environment, students will be encouraged to explore their creativity, experiment with sound, collaborate with their peers, and develop skills like coordination and confidence. Educators will gain new pedagogical approaches, ultimately resulting in an enriched learning experience for students and the promotion of a deeper appreciation of the arts and cultural sector.

Project Title: Żabbar Wall – Where Colours Speak

At St Margaret College, Dr.Frans Chetcuti, Zabbar Primary B, 11-year-old students are working with graffiti artist Glenn Cauchi on a creative gym wall project. The students will develop ideas and sketches that will be turned into vibrant graffiti including clay and multisensory installations. Local community members will also contribute by adding handprints or quotes to the wall. The project will culminate in a performance that highlights the students’ journey, featuring a skit and original music composed with the help of artist and musician Augusto Cardinali. A digital presentation will be shown during the performance, showcasing the project’s development. The final presentation will take place at a small event attended by parents and all those involved, celebrating the students’ creativity, teamwork, and community collaboration.
