The young artist shall receive a €2,000 grant from Arts Council Malta to continue her studies and training in the visual arts
The Arts Council Malta Award at the Sovereign Art Foundation Students Prize Malta & Gozo was awarded to Christina Sciberras, a student attending St Martin’s Institute of Higher Education for her work titled What Time Leaves Behind. The award was announced by Dr Nikki Petroni, Head of Strategy during the Sovereign Art Foundation Students Prize Malta & Gozo ceremony held on the 16th April.
The Arts Council Malta award consists of a €2,000 grant for training and education in the visual arts. Organised by the Sovereign Art Foundation, the award recognises secondary and sixth form students’ artwork as well as their educational institutions’ art departments’ contributions. This initiative offers an important platform allowing young artists to present their work, develop their artistic practice and receive recognition on a wider scale.

Speaking about the initiative, Arts Council Malta’s Executive Chairman, Dr. Luke Dalli said, “Sovereign Art Foundation Students Prize Malta & Gozo provides young artists with an important platform where they can explore their creativity. It also offers them a space for their work to be seen and recognised in a professional and international context. Initiatives such as these reflect our commitment to strengthening education, internationalisation and professionalism in the local cultural and creative sectors while also looking ahead towards a more sustainable and participatory future for the arts in Malta and Gozo.”
Dr Petroni added, “This award makes up part of the Council’s strategic goal of investing in the continuous training and development of local talent from the very first stages in the artistic journey. The support that we are currently offering to this young artist offers her a way to access more learning opportunities so that she can strengthen her skills and begin to see her creative abilities as something she can further develop outside of the classroom.”
“The collaboration with Sovereign Art Foundation also shows how collaborations with the private sector can create practical opportunities for cultural artists and practitioners. By bringing together educational institutions, cultural organisations and support from the private sector, such initiatives help to create a stronger path for young creatives all the while encouraging them to further develop their voice, confidence and professional ambitions.”
It is a monumental privilege for us at the Sovereign Art Foundation to play a small part in supporting the career aspirations of Malta and Gozo’s talented young artists,” said Stephen Griffiths, Managing Director of Sovereign Trust Malta. “We highly value our collaboration with Arts Council Malta and are pleased to contribute to initiatives that provide young creatives with meaningful opportunities to develop their skills, gain recognition, and build confidence as they take their next steps in the visual arts.”
