Collaboration through the Domestic Film Unit gave local film professionals access to industry discussions and international expertise

Once again this year Arts Council Malta was pleased to offer its support to Malta Comic Con 2026, while also collaborating on a number of activities aimed specifically at Malta’s domestic film sector.

Through its Domestic Film Unit, Arts Council Malta worked with Malta Comic Con to provide a limited number of entry tickets to individuals working within the domestic film sector, giving them access to the event and its film-related programme.

Dr Luke Dalli said “Arts Council Malta is proud to support Malta Comic Con as an important platform for Malta’s creative community, while also using our collaboration with the organisers to create opportunities specifically tailored to the needs of our domestic film sector. By bringing international industry professionals to Malta and creating spaces for local practitioners to engage directly with them, we are helping to turn an already valuable cultural event into an opportunity for professional development, knowledge exchange and networking. This is at the heart of our role at Arts Council Malta: supporting the sector while creating meaningful opportunities for our creative practitioners to connect, learn and grow.”

The collaboration included a Film Directing Masterclass with acclaimed British director, writer and editor Neil Marshall, offering participants insight into his experience of directing for film and television.

The programme also featured an Actors Discussion Panel bringing together a selection of actors attending Malta Comic Con as guests. Moderated by Chris Thompson, the session gave participants the opportunity to hear directly from professionals working across film and television and to engage with their experiences of the industry.

Lyona Xuereb Gatt, Head of the Domestic Film Development & Strategy Unit, stated: “Film is an important part of Malta’s wider creative ecosystem, and bringing Malta’s emerging film professionals face to face with professionals of this calibre makes that support practical and immediately relevant to their own careers.”

Arts Council Malta’s support for Malta Comic Con forms part of its continued work to create professional development, networking and knowledge-sharing opportunities for practitioners within Malta’s domestic film sector.
