A total of 36 Maltese filmmakers will benefit from a total investment of €2 million in their projects, as Arts Council Malta announced the list of selected projects under the Screen Support Scheme.

This scheme, which is split into five strands, has the aim of strengthening key sectors in this sector which have been identified as needing prioritisation and support. Every strand supports audiovisual works in every stage of development—from production to scriptwriting, with the main focus being on creativity, quality, and cultural value.

Minister for Culture, Lands and Local Government Owen Bonnici stated that for the second year running there is heavy investment in Malta’s domestic film industry, through which the commitment to prioritise the sector has been consolidated, while simultaneously ensuring that it receives more support. He explained that last year there was an investment of €1 million which was directed towards Maltese filmmakers, the first time something like this happened in the industry. He added that, this year, the investment that will be given to local productions will be increased to €2 million.

“We believe in the talents and skills of our filmmakers; so much so that we made this part of our electoral pledges, and we pledged that we would offer the recognition and resources that this local industry deserves. We will continue implementing our pledge—not through a one-time measure, but through a clear plan which will undoubtedly strengthen the audiovisual ecosystem in its entirety, and thereby assist it in reaching its full potential. Our investment is reaping fruits, and we look forward to witnessing it,” concluded Minister Owen Bonnici.

Arts Council Malta’s Executive Chairman Luke Dalli stated that there was great interest in this scheme, something which shows how much enthusiasm and skill there is in this sector, further stating that, in view of this, Arts Council Malta is committed to continue strengthening this fund. “Our aim is to go beyond mere financial support. Through this scheme, we will be building a platform for sustainable growth, where creatives not only find funding, but mentoring, professional development, and collaborative tools,” Luke Dalli said.

In the past few days, the Council also launched the sixth strand of this scheme which assists in the promotional stage of audiovisual cultural and creative productions which were completed not more than 18 months before the submission of the completed applications. This strand is managed on a rolling call basis and will close on the 18th of November 2025, or when the fund is entirely disbursed. The guidelines are available on the Council’s website.
